What actor was completely wrong for the role they were in?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Mine is Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code.

Everything about the Prince of Persia movie. Just, everything.

Interestingly enough, the Dragonball movie actually cast a fairly decent Goku... just everything else was total shit.

Zachary Quinto as Spock

I know this is an unpopular opinion. And I know a big issue might be the writing/directing. But everything about his Spock reads "asshole" to me. I found Nimoy's restrained and subtly human Spock to be so much more sympathetic than Quinto's, despite the fact that Quinto's basically suffers tragedy after tragedy.

There's just an edge of condescension to his take on Spock that I despise.

Whereas Nimoy's Spock, whenever he talked about humans, it always came across as not actual superiority or dislike, but as a way to protect himself. Which was far more compelling.

I completely agree, though I dislike most of the cast of those movies! Quinto's my least favourite, either way.

Mmm, yeah. There's definitely been a trend of aloof = smug superiority recently. I think part of Quinto!Spock suffers from the actual script though.

I agree in Into Darkness. I actually liked him in the first one a lot.

I blame the writing for Quinto's Spock (especially in Into Darkness), more than I blame Quinto's performance as him.

I agree so strongly!! Of all the New Trek cast, he looks most like the original, and acts least like him. Not that he's a bad actor, or that the character he's playing isn't interesting, just....his Spock is very, very much not the same character as in TOS.

Spock had a subtle warmth and humor (primarily seen in interactions with Kirk, McCoy, and Uhuru) that I admit I didn't notice til I was older.

Quinto just had ... none of that for me.

Scott Bakula as Archer in Star Trek Enterprise. Bakula is not a bad actor, but he does have a particular style that really did not suit the character of Archer. I think he might have made a good Trip though, given him a softer edge than the much more abrasive and assholish edge that Trinneer had.

Completely disagree.

Re: What actor was completely wrong for the role they were in?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, go figure - I loved Trip the way he was. He irked me in the first episode, but I got used to him pretty quickly, and he quickly became my favourite character. Cannot imagine anyone else in the part.

I wasn't familiar with Bakula before STE, so I was fine with him as Archer. It seemed like most people who disliked him in STE were expecting a more 'Quantum Leap' type of character?

Interesting... Can you pinpoint why exactly he's bad for the role/ what'd you like to change?

Alan Rickman for Snape. He's a great actor, and movie!Snape is an interesting character, but he's almost nothing like book!Snape.

I agree completely - and I'm feeling vindicated right now, because I used to run in internet circle that absolutely WORSHIPPED his Snape.

who could you see in that part, then?

(Movie Snape always seemed okay to me, but I'm curious to hear a different perspective)

This is how I feel about Gary Oldman. Great actor, but I feel he was completely wrong for the part of Sirius.

James Franco for Oscar "Oz" Diggs. The part was originally for Robert Downey Jr. and it shows. Franco can't hold a candle to RDJ's whip fast, whip smart acting.

Carey Mulligan in Drive. Which isn't even the beginning of my issues with that movie, but she was so wrong for that part.

John Noble as Denethor

Denethor is such a complicated, Shakespearean character - it needed someone with subtly to portray the character well.

Hayden Christenson as Anakin Skywalker in the prequels

Kristen Stewart as Bella Swann. With a more competent and talented actress, Bella might have been halfway likeable.

I hated Tom Hanks in the Da Vinci Code, but I kind of hated the film in general, so I'm not sure whether he was miscast, or he just got swept up in my overall wave of disbelief.
