Re: FFVII remake

The cross dressing, yes, but also the racism (Barrettes whole character, the racist native american stereotypes later in the game) the homophobia (Gay men will rape you of you pass out in a brothel! Barrette likes to play sailor) the sexism (Yuffie and that blond woman being threatened with rape. That guy who slaps Aeris across the face to shut her up. the violent fridging of one of the few women in the game. Tifa's entire outfit, take your pick. Actually two women get fridged as well, Vincent's ex.)

The nineties was a horribly regressive time, but for some reason people have this whole nostalgia trip about it, and I think they're going to keep the whole thing as it was without updating any of the things that need to not exist.

While I see what you're saying, the stuff you've listed here would basically involve them having to change vast chunks of the game.
I mean retconning Aeris's death?? That's only one of THE most memorable deaths in a Final Fantasy game ever.

Also remember the game is being made by Japan, not the US...

Some of this stuff you're really reaching on, Aeris' death is a major plot point that isn't merely a fridging, etc. (Or do you think any female character's death qualifies as fridging whether or not it actually meets the definition?)

But Barret's dialogue is a result of the localization (he doesn't sound like Mr. T in the Japanese release) and that will probably be changed.

Fridging: A female character who is killed to advance a males story arch, to provide angst and character development for a male. Aeris was killed so that could and the presumed male player have a reason to hate Sephiroth and desperately want to stop his plans. Unnecessary female death used to motivate the male character.

The whole group is affected by her death. More to the point, she's not merely discarded after death but continues to play a role in the plot. If it's a fridging, it's a subversion of such.

Yes,but the only effect we see 'the group' show is sad faces and a prolonged scene of clouds manpain.

DA

Actually, we see Cloud's manpain then the rest of the group tells him to get up and get going because they're hurting too but manpain helps no one. Then Cloud does. Did you forget that part?

Of course they did, because it runs counter to the narrative they've got in their head.

AFAIK they edited the scene in the PC port to add more mourning.

I think they actually did tone down Barret's Mr. T impersonation, at least, in the PC port that's on Steam r/n. I noticed it wasn't nearly as obvious as it was when I first played the game on PSX.

And def. agreed... Aerith's death wasn't a fridging. Not in the slightest, because like an anon above/below me said, the entire group was affected by it and gave them all motivation to stop Sephiroth (aside from saving the Planet, of course).

... I see why people called you joyless

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I don't take joy in the degradation of marginalised people.

There is a problem here, and it isn't me.

That's all well and good but try not making shit up.

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Please point out what I said that is not an actual part of the game?

Re: FFVII remake

(Anonymous) 2015-06-20 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, for starters, your claim of homophobia is right out. Aside from the fact that Japan has a very different relationship with homosexuality than we do, you pretty much have to make up context that simply isn't there in order to describe Barret (and the rest of the group) wearing sailor outfits as homophobic.

And the guy who slaps Aeris across the face was a villain FFS. And people have already tried to explain Aeris' death to you.

I think you need to get out of your bubble.

Yeah, I can see why your friends called you joyless, because I think you really are reaching for some of these.

Unless you're the type of person who looks for every little thing to be offended by, in which case, hey go for broke and go find a ROM of the Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe to play/watch or something.
