Just like you forgot about Claire, right?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
A woman being in a film =/= the film being decent to women.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. It's not like Claire implemented a plan to save their bacon and then outran a fucking T. rex in heels or anything.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
HEEEEEELLLLLSSSSSSSS.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
...and was told she needs to pop out babies and learned all about how she needs a man.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Her sister said that, but there's nothing in the movie to show her sister being correct. (Yes, Claire should have been better to her nephews; the fact that she couldn't even guess at how old they were bothered me) but there was nothing in the end that showed she'd ~seen the light~ and wanted babies.

2. ? ??

I only have a vague idea how old my SIL's kids are. Mostly because I have no emotional attachment to them, the oldest one is probably about... 13/14 maybe? And she brought them into the marriage so it's not like my brother's daughter where I changed her diapers, fed her, babysat her, etc.

I couldn't fault Claire for not earning World's Greatest Aunt mug when it's obvious they live far enough apart that a plane ride is necessary to even see each other and it's obvious she's career focused.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, except these weren't "her SIL's kids" that "she brought into the marriage", these were her sister's children.

And like, if she had been shown to have that much info "13/14 maybe?" that would have been fine, but she didn't even have a guess, she was going by height.

Like, I fucking loved Claire, don't get me wrong, but I did think that was frustrating, that she couldn't even guess how old her nephews were.
comma_chameleon: (Why?!)

[personal profile] comma_chameleon 2015-06-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They're kids she hasn't seen in seven years. She guessed the older one at 'high school age' which is still a guess/pretty specific age range.

I dunno, I guess it didn't bother me terribly when their age was kind of irrelevant to finding them. It just seemed like another, "Oh look at what a terrible family person Claire is," stab.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC she also broke a promise to them.

Like, you can criticize someone for being bad to their family and it not be about how they need to have teh baybez.

And I say this as someone who doesn't want kids. Not every little thing about a woman being pointed out as, "You fucked up in regards to your family" is about how they need to have kids.

Honestly it was really only the "If I have kids--" "When." exchange that got my hackles up.

I'm just saying that there's nothing wrong with being a 'bad' aunt. I put that in quotation marks because honestly, I have aunts and uncles that I probably wouldn't even recognize in passing on the street. None of us live in the same country and we never have, so while there's that occasional family obligation that brings us together, it's pretty infrequent and I wouldn't consider them bad aunts or uncles for not knowing what I looked like or how old I was.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-22 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Except you're missing something here. Claire has moments where you see she WANTS to be a good aunt, and she lets things get in the way. This isn't a situation wherein she doesn't care. She does care. She wants things to be better with her family or she wouldn't have tried at all. She just doesn't really do anything to MAKE them better.

Just because YOU don't give a shit about your extended family doesn't mean that is the character's experience.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I forget my own parents' ages sometimes. It's just not something I think about because it's not all that relevant to my relationship with them.

I really don't think it's a big deal. But society has this thing where you're supposed to care ooooh sooooo muuuuuch about everything relating to someone's child.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah you should care about stuff related to that child, if you're offering to take care of them. It's not like they just showed up at the park one day, she invited them to visit her and told her sister that she would look after her kids for the weekend/whatever... you'd think she'd at least have some clue as to how old they are.

What? I don't know my nephews and nieces ages. I've never even seen them.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
And would you offer to take care of them for the weekend without asking that information? As I've said in another comment, the kids didn't show up at the park - Claire invited them there. It's not even like the parents were expected to come as well, she specifically invited her two nephews.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Outrunning a Rex is bullshit, no matter what's between your legs.
comma_chameleon: (Jin is usually invalid.)

[personal profile] comma_chameleon 2015-06-21 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we wouldn't want to have to suspend disbelief in a movie about cloned/genetically modified dinosaurs. That would be hard.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we wouldn't want to keep a damn shred of consistency with this franchise.

Damn, Ian, why didn't you just wear some pumps and do laps around that dumb beast?!

[personal profile] comma_chameleon 2015-06-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure a lot of people aren't going into movies like Jurassic World for consistency.

Though I'm amused by the number of people I've seen that think you can't run in what looked like maaaaaybe two inch heels.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
They must not have tried it ever, it's not that hard.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-21 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Raptors not being three feet tall and having no feathers is also bs.

[personal profile] comma_chameleon 2015-06-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
In all fairness, they did somewhat address that when Wu said that they never wanted reality and that a lot of the dinos would look different if they had.
