Zutara. I left a similar comment in the secret 4 thread, but all I can get out of it is it's the pretty girl gets the hot dorky 'bad' boy trope that people like? Like, they hardly even interact in canon.

I don't say you have to like it but I'm surprised that you don't get it. They have a very standard enemies-to-friends dynamic, which is easy to make into an enemies-to-lovers dynamic.

And they do interact. I don't know what your benchmark is for the number of times that characters have to interact but just their interactions in Ba Sing Se, the episode where they hunt down her mom's killer, and the finale is a lot of really good interaction between them. It's a lot of development of their relationship. I'm not surprised that they would be popular. (Not surprised by Aang/Katara either.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that episode happen after Zutara became really popular?

I have no idea. Does it matter now? I only started watching after all the episodes aired. Are you saying that you don't understand Zutara's popularity before Season 2 or 3, so everything from there doesn't count? So, you do understand it after Season 3? For context, I started seeing them as a ship way back in Season 1. But, like I said, I don't know what your benchmark for "a lot of interaction" is.

I never liked Zutara but I understand why it's popular. The several reasons I imagine:

-Opposites attract. Some people love these types of ships with water vs fire and the whole enemies thing.

-Katara was the girl a lot of female viewers identified with and Zuko is the hot guy they want. Not Aang.

-The potential for drama. With Aang and Katara, there's really not much drama. But with Zuko and Katara, they come from different worlds. He's the crown prince of the Fire Nation while she's a Water Tribe peasant. They're both EXTREMELY strong-willed with tempers. Thus potential storylines can be VERY interesting, with lots of intrigue, separation, sacrifice, angst, etc.

-Katara is, arguably, the most complex female character while Zuko is the most complex male (according to Mike and Bryan, he's the most complex character period). Some people find these types of characters the most interesting to explore.

-They're both very attractive characters.

I didn't ship it primarily because I always saw their relationship as sibling like, in the sense that Katara was kind of like the little sister Azula should have always been to Zuko. The finale, in particular, really reinforced this to me.

I also think it's because Zuko fits the Draco in leather pants trope and Katara is an easy character to use as a self insert

I agree. I was trying to say it more nicely with:

But...yeah...that's kind of how I see it.

This sentiment bugs me a bit because that's not why I ship it at all. But then maybe it does have something to do with why it's so popular? :/ IDK I'm glad I never really got into the fandom for this show...
