Fingon/Maedhros; Turin/Beleg - I hate these pairings with a burning passion. I can't stand Turin at all. Fingon/Maedhros I've been turned off more by the fandom but I also don't care for the pairing (and it's not the incest thing).

Gimli/Legolas - I just really like their friendship so I don't care to see them shipped.

Kili/Thranduil - I sort of understand it (if it's just that they're two hot characters - other than that, I don't get it). The Tauriel/Kili romance destroyed Kili's character for me and I can't stand him now. Plus, all the stories are so OOC and terrible.

Turin/Beleg doesn't work for me either. Because while I do like Turin as a character, he's horrible for everyone around him and Beleg's fate sucks enough without adding romance to it.

I do love Fingon/Maedhros, though. I don't like all the fandom versions of the pairing, but it does hit a lot of buttons for me.

Thranduil/any dwarf doesn't work for me. Thranduil/Thorin art is hot, but I don't really like hate sex that much. There is too much between Thranduil and anyone from the House of Durin for there to ever be romance.

I do like Gimli/Legolas mostly because I love friendships. I don't want to read about their sex lives.

I disagree about the Thranduil/Dwarf but that's because I completely reject Thranduil's characterization from the movies (and a lot of Thorin's characterization too). Thranduil does not actually hate dwarves. Indeed, if LOTR is to be believed, Thranduil had dwarves help him build his mountain stronghold. The anger is on Thorin's side, and if he had lived after BoFA and learned his lesson, then there absolutely could be a believable romance between Thranduil/Thorin. And Fili would have even less reason to hate Thranduil.

Kili/Thranduil fics though, are all set in the movie and use arranged marriages and Thranduil having multiple spouses and all sorts of stuff that is so far removed from canon that I just can't. If there were only one or two such fics, I could maybe get over this but it's so endemic to the pairing that I can't stand them. (Plus, as I said, I can't stand Aiden Turner's Kili now, and that's the only Kili anyone writes.)

Thranduil in the books doesn't hate dwarves any more than any other elf does. But there is a reason that the friendship between Legolas and Gimli was so unusual. And plus I don't like the idea of anything that takes away from the specialness of that friendship (another reason I've decided I don't like Tauriel/Kili even in the movies).

Oh, ugh, that sounds horrible. Glad I've avoided those fics. Really the only movie-only fics I read are Bilbo/Thorin and that's only because I really liked the movie dynamic between them. And I've not really been reading many of those either because I've been mostly reading book fics.

Good for you, I guess. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean that Thranduil/Durin is any more unlikely than your Celebrimbor/Sauron. Thranduil/Durin would not take away from the specialness of Legolas/Gimli.

Okay? Not sure why explaining my opinion resulted in a snippy response? I don't think there is anything wrong with whatever you want to ship just because I happen to not like the particular pairing.

Alright, then I will be sure to mention how you have completely turned me off Celebrimbor/Sauron and how much I dislike the pairing every time you bring it up. I'm sure that won't annoy you at all.

Wow. Okay, no, actually, if you were mentioning it in a thread where the whole point was to talk about shipping, then no it wouldn't bother me because that would be the whole point of the thread. Although, not sure how one person liking a ship can ruin it for you. Don't think I'd give anyone that kind of power over me.

Tbf there's not really another Kili to write, the book version is barely really a character.

Which means that you can do practically anything better than the movie. Certainly you can get rid of the crappy romance, puppy eyes, beardlessness, un-dwarfish features - all of it. I would love to see a take on book!Kili. It would be a million times better than what they came up with in the movie.

I mostly agree with you on those, though I have different reasons.

I like Fingon/Maedhros in theory but end up apathetic about it in practice.

I dislike Turin and think he's a total ass, but I barely recall anything about him and Beleg (I haven't read Children of Hurin and it's been a while since I read The Silmarillion).

Gimli and Legolas failed to ever grab me. Their friendship failed to grab me too. I didn't even develop a liking for dwarves until The Hobbit, and the ones I like were not the ones who veered towards the type Gimli is.

I also can't see any logic in the Thranduil pairings, I really think he would never let himself feel anything for a dwarf. Like you said, two hot characters.

But my personal mental image of Kíli was influenced by fanfic before I even saw DoS, so the mess with Tauriel didn't put me off him, but I do think both characters were twisted out of all shape by it.
