Do you ever feel ungrateful for a fill?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I posted a prompt on a prompting meme. It was a little mushy and fluffy, yes, but that's what I like dammit. Someone responding writing a fic that went in a completely different direction and in the process criticized my prompt in a author's note for being too fluffy. I feel like a jerk because they wrote a fic for me...but...yeah.

The one time in a prompt fest where someone included something I specifically mentioned as a squick. I managed to make a half hearted comment, but I was mostly annoyed rather than grateful.

They didn't write it for you, they wrote it for themselves, clearly.

I think you're entitled to feel bad because that's a dick move. There's no reason to purposefully change the tone and chide a prompter for their likes.

But to answer your question, yes I have felt ungrateful for a fill. In my case, the author did try to fill two of my prompts as I had written them. It was just so poorly written and so OOC that I couldn't appreciate it. I think they might be ESL or a young author so I would never say anything. I felt bad that I didn't like them, and also like a dick because I hope that someone else will still give my prompts a try.

They filled your prompt but talked shit about it? That seems rude, I think you're justified not being pleased with that. There's no for them need to do that

You're not being a jerk. Filling a prompt isn't mandatory, if they didn't want to write something for your prompt, they didn't have to. "Filling" it with fic that isn't what you wanted AND dissing what you asked for is shitty.

They didn't really fill your prompt, did they? They only used it as an inspiration and wrote something else. You don't have to feel grateful. And criticizing the prompt is just bad form.

they sound like a total douche tbh. I would either not respond to the fill or leave a slightly passive aggressive "thanks" as your only reply

If an author deliberately misinterpreted a prompt by doing things like including stuff the prompter plainly said to avoid (like NOTPs and squicks), I would say the prompter is in no way obligated to feel grateful.

Ugh. I think you're justified in being annoyed. Having the fill not being what you wanted can sometimes happen, and being a little disappointed is understandable. Having the author insult your prompt; that's just not cool. I'm so sorry they did that to you.

Yes, but I usually don't tell the filler so.

One time I said go ahead when someone asked if it was okay to write a fill with both sides of the pairing genderswapped. It made me realise that while I can live with one side of a slash pairing swapped so it ends up het, I can't read it double-swapped into femmeslash. It's just not to my tastes.

I had an old plotbunny I'd posted a few years ago picked up, but the resulting fic was boring as hell and about characters I could not bring myself to read since I'd moved fandoms. (The plotbunny was about a concept that could be applied to any character.)

I feel, from what you've said, your case is one that you would be entitled to be a bit annoyed at - I mean, they really criticized you for your prompt being too fluffy? If I post a prompt that is fluffy, I expect a fluffy fic to result! (My fluffiest fic from a prompt was actually a deathfic, but it was a deathfic about a dying character being escorted to the halls of the Dead. I meant it to be fluffy.)

lol most of the time. Particularly when it's obvious that it's some 16 year old trying to write for a kinkmeme and the sex is all glossed over on a porn prompt.

I'm just like ....you tried.

I felt a little bit cheesed because I wrote an interesting prompt for a fairly popular pairing on a very active meme and nobody filled it. Then a couple of years later I stumbled across a story on AO3 written for my prompt (that I'd forgotten about) and the author saying in the notes that they loved the prompt and couldn't believe it went unfilled and hoped the original prompter liked the fill.

It was maybe the nicest thing that happened to me that year, so it meant a lot.

Hell yes. I once requested "Orochimaru: mad scientist mpreg" and got OOC NaruSasu fluff instead.
Like, I wanted some sciencey body horror details but the filler glossed over the preg part with "oh yes Orochimaru managed to knock himself up and that's it, see of Kabuto is terrified, Sasuke is horrified, and Naruto helps Sasuke get over the horror with OOC fluff". Urrrgh.
Not. Even. A. Bit. Grateful. In fact I felt they were mocking my request.
