God, that pissed me off back in 10th grade. Saving someone, great, but that line just comes off as suicidal, and just made me think he needs an intervention. >:/

...Didn't piss me off as much as the teacher saying Madame Defarge was pure evil, though. She was absolutely uncompromising and pitiless, but she came out of a terrible crucible. Fortunately I was kind of a teacher's pet and could get away with arguing my opinions on this.

In the Futurama episode "Love and Rocket" when Fry secretly attaches his full oxygen tank to Leela's when he sees her tank is almost empty.

The episode Swan Song of Supernatural where the ~power of love~ allows Sam to take control of his body from Lucifer long enough to jump into the cage, dooming him to hell but saving his brother (and the rest of the world, but it was his memories of Dean that gave him the strength to do it)

Haurchefant taking that magical spear to protect the PC. Everything about that scene broke my heart, but it was his final words that destroyed me: "You... you are unharmed? F-forgive me... I could not bear the the thought of... of... Oh, do not look at me so. A smile better suits a hero..." He's fucking dying and all he wants is to see you smile one last time.

I have never, ever cried that hard over a fictional character's death before. He was a true bro to the very end.

This is constantly happening in Halo, so a lot, but my favorites are Jorge and Kurt.

Mordin in Mass Effect 3. "Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong." Can never not tear up when I think of that scene.

Not necessarily for one character, but Snake during MGS4. Again I mention the microwave scene, because it was damn good. Raiden's involvement was also nice. The Boss in MGS3... :(

There were a few good ones in SGA...my favorite being when Rodney tries to sacrifice himself so his sister can live and John 'won't let him'.

And of course Spock in Wrath of Khan.

This is one of my favorite tropes ever. I always love it pretty much when it shows up.

To mention one that hasn't been mentioned already, Finrod sacrificing himself for Beren knowing that they were going on an impossible mission and he would likely die and then being tortured by Sauron and yet not giving away their identity or the mission and then dying.

Boromir trying to protect Merry and Pippin in The Fellowsship of the Ring, I just like that scene a lot, how he tries so hard to keep them safe and how the music and noise fade out as he gets hit with more arrows.

Danilov (Joseph Fiennes) locates the sniper Vassily (Jude Law) in the ruins of Stalingrad, where he's lying in wait for the German master sniper who is lying in wait for him. Danilov, who first made Vassili famous and then, out of jealousy, tried to get him in trouble with the Party, tells Vassili "I've been a fool. Now I'm going to do something useful for once." He takes the cap Vassili is wearing, puts it on his own head. "I'm going to show you where he is." And he stands up, making himself a target for Koenig--who thus reveals his own position to Vassili.
