Eh, most people at cons are socially maladjusted to the extreme. In a lot of cases, it's literally the only social function they ever attend, so you kind of have to expect bizarre/antisocial/creepy behavior. Try not to let it get to you too much.

This. About five years ago, I was at a con and a young girl literally ran up to me, shouted, "You're really hot," in my face, and sprinted away.

I don't think you can call that any kind of harassment.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I think anon was relating a story of social awkwardness or people acting bizarre, not calling that harassment.

NAYRT - Yeah, same.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-27 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you have any kind of reading comprehension.

The last time I cosplayed was when "glomping" was still a big thing, and I made the mistake of cosplaying a character that was fairly popular at the time. I lost count of the number of girls that leapt at me, crushing me in their arms as tight as they could. About half of them grabbed at my breasts.

So? They need to learn to not act like ignorant creepers. Sorry, being 'socially maladjusted' isn't an excuse for staring, eye-fucking, groping, leering, or any other behavior that is offputting and creepy.

Anon didn't say they were right to. They were answering OP's question about why.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-27 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite right.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, there's no excuse at all for it, it's terrible behavior. But it's also something that's literally never going to change about a con. You can yell at someone for creeping/glomping/etc., but that's only going to stop it from one person, towards one person, and likely only in the short-term. On the whole, they simply won't understand that what they're doing is wrong (I often describe it as them imagining themselves as the protagonists of their own anime/game/etc.), no matter how much you try to correct it. It's just not something that's able to be enforced.

I...really don't agree with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I mean, what do you suggest? There are already rules in place in cons about not touching people or taking pictures without permission, but people do it anyway. You can ask people to stop, but in my experience, they'll roll their eyes or be incredibly offended, maybe stop with you, and go harass someone else. You can talk to con staff about it, but there's nothing they can do without any proof, and more often than not they're already pulled in so many directions that they're not really going to go out of their way to do so.

In all the years I've been to cons, I've seen/heard of a total of seven people getting thrown out for harassment, but of course that's the very very tip of the iceberg.

These people are not incapable of learning (I don't imagine you're suggesting they aren't). It takes making noise, making a stink, pushing, being in someone's face, *making* the staff kick out the worst of them, making them publicly put up rules about it, BEING OFFENDED.

If my con experience is becoming really sucky due to asshats who won't stop groping, leering, whatever - i'm gonna make noise until *they* go away. At the con, online, everywhere.

Shrugging and going 'well, nobody really takes it seriously' isn't gonna do a damn thing.
