Slash or het, I don't give a shit, if the shippers are obnoxious, I'm not touching the paring with a twenty-nine and a half foot pole.

re: Johnlock, Destiel, whatever pet name Daryl/Beth has, AoU BruceNat fans, I could go on, but I already know you've judged me on my first two examples, so.

This! I don't care if it's het, slash, or femslash, obnoxious shippers turn me the fuck off a pairing.

I don't think obnoxious shippers have ever turned me off a pairing. Shipping is something I either do for a pairing or not. I don't have much control over it, and I can just ignore shippers.

On the other hand, obnoxious shippers have turned me off whole fandoms. I never even go there.

Maybe that was a poor choice of words. It's more that obnoxious shippers turn me off even considering/checking out a pairing even if it may be up my alley.

They also turn me off of fandoms.

Yeah same here. I like what I like, and ship what I ship. But there are fandoms I won't go near because of the shippers.

Same, if I like the dynamic between two characters and see them in a romantic light then I'll end up shipping them no matter what the fanbase is like. If I don't like the fandom then I'll just avoid it. (I've done it before, and will undoubtedly do so again.)

On the other hand, shippers don't typically turn me off to fandoms; if I want to try something I will, and again, if the fanbase is one I'm not fond of then I'll just enjoy the media by myself.

Maybe it's because I've been in some of the larger, more 'obnoxious' fandoms and tend to know what to expect. (Probably doesn't hurt that I tend to jump from fandom to fandom anyway, so if one doesn't work for me there's usually something else to try.)

+2 I ship some slash pairings, but I would not touch any pairing in the Supernatural fandom, het or slash with a ten foot pole due in part to the fandom.

Eee'yup. That's how I ended up getting turned off from F!Shepard/Garrus after a while: the fanbase for it was... something else. I also didn't like how some people tried to incite ship wars with the Shenko fans (as some of my friends were and still are Shenko shippers who never had anything bad to say about Garrus or the F!Shepard/Garrus ship), ughh. To be fair, I think the ME fandom overall has long since mellowed out compared to the peak time during ME2 to ME3, so maybe things have changed so far as the shipper's intensity levels go..? I dunno, it's been a couple years since I've really set foot back into it. :T

And anime fandoms, back in the day, were the worst with this kind of behavior. I won't name examples, but I'm pretty sure some folks could tell stories upon stories of obnoxious shippers back in the heyday of anime fandom in the West.

Anime fandoms today are still pretty bad about it imo. Tumblr has only made things worse.

How are the bruce/nat shippers obnoxious? Honestly curious, there's barley any of us to begin with and we mostly keep to ourselves lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yo this. If anything most of the super anti-bruce/nat shippers tend to be the more obnoxious ones. I remember right when the movie came out and one of the BNF of the fandom drew a little bit and reblogged some fanart, and like right away people started messaging her saying they would unfollow her if she continued supporting the pairing. Another person I followed got a few pms with random usernames, claiming that these people apparently supported bruce/nat and that they should be unfollowed immedialy.

Yes, this was a thing that actually happened.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the terrible thing about Bruce/Nat is actually canon. The fandom was fine without the 'help'.
