Slash or het, I don't give a shit, if the shippers are obnoxious, I'm not touching the paring with a twenty-nine and a half foot pole.

re: Johnlock, Destiel, whatever pet name Daryl/Beth has, AoU BruceNat fans, I could go on, but I already know you've judged me on my first two examples, so.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This! I don't care if it's het, slash, or femslash, obnoxious shippers turn me the fuck off a pairing.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think obnoxious shippers have ever turned me off a pairing. Shipping is something I either do for a pairing or not. I don't have much control over it, and I can just ignore shippers.

On the other hand, obnoxious shippers have turned me off whole fandoms. I never even go there.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe that was a poor choice of words. It's more that obnoxious shippers turn me off even considering/checking out a pairing even if it may be up my alley.

They also turn me off of fandoms.

+2 I ship some slash pairings, but I would not touch any pairing in the Supernatural fandom, het or slash with a ten foot pole due in part to the fandom.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2015-07-01 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Eee'yup. That's how I ended up getting turned off from F!Shepard/Garrus after a while: the fanbase for it was... something else. I also didn't like how some people tried to incite ship wars with the Shenko fans (as some of my friends were and still are Shenko shippers who never had anything bad to say about Garrus or the F!Shepard/Garrus ship), ughh. To be fair, I think the ME fandom overall has long since mellowed out compared to the peak time during ME2 to ME3, so maybe things have changed so far as the shipper's intensity levels go..? I dunno, it's been a couple years since I've really set foot back into it. :T

And anime fandoms, back in the day, were the worst with this kind of behavior. I won't name examples, but I'm pretty sure some folks could tell stories upon stories of obnoxious shippers back in the heyday of anime fandom in the West.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Anime fandoms today are still pretty bad about it imo. Tumblr has only made things worse.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
How are the bruce/nat shippers obnoxious? Honestly curious, there's barley any of us to begin with and we mostly keep to ourselves lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yo this. If anything most of the super anti-bruce/nat shippers tend to be the more obnoxious ones. I remember right when the movie came out and one of the BNF of the fandom drew a little bit and reblogged some fanart, and like right away people started messaging her saying they would unfollow her if she continued supporting the pairing. Another person I followed got a few pms with random usernames, claiming that these people apparently supported bruce/nat and that they should be unfollowed immedialy.

Yes, this was a thing that actually happened.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the terrible thing about Bruce/Nat is actually canon. The fandom was fine without the 'help'.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This times a million.

op, just want to be clear

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
op here

I'm not referring to a particular pairing, but to people who dismiss slash as a whole supposedly due to the behavior of the shippers.

That's what gets on my nerves.

I can see how if you're in the MCU fandom, you could be turned off from Steve/Bucky by oversaturation of woobie!Bucky. Or shippers who keep screaming that the ship needs to be made canon.

But people who say they don't ship ANY slash pairings BECAUSE of slash shippers are, IMO, full of shit. If you don't like it, you don't like it, but don't pretend that slash fans are worse than other shippers.

Re: op, just want to be clear

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
But what if you don't ship any slash pairings because of the slash shippers, AND you don't ship any non-canon het pairings because of the het shippers as well? What if you dislike the behavior of all non-canon shippers?

Re: op, just want to be clear

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't noticed canon shippers' behavior being any better.

Re: op, just want to be clear

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
OP

STILL bullshit imo

Because canon shippers can be just as bad. Have you seen some of their behavior towards "rival" characters? Or "rival" shippers?

Or when they berate people who don't ship their pairing as being racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, etc.

It's not that obnoxious shippers turn me off so much that often it's shipping for a juggernaut pairing and I get so sick of the pairing after a while even if I like it.

I get you.

I've been in slash fandoms that were pretty nuts, but I've also been in many het fandoms that were just as nuts, neither are better or worse than the other.

I don't really buy the enthusiasm of anyone who can pick and choose what they ship based on the behavior of the fandom or whatever, it pretty much makes me think what they do "ship" they're really just fandoming over for some kind of social points. I would love to be able to improve the way in which other people ship my ships sometimes but that doesn't mean I can just magically turn off the goggles and the shippy plot bunnies.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on what you mean by shipping, imo.

If it's just the ability to see and enjoy chemistry between two characters, that's one thing, but a lot of people use "shipping" to refer to actively engaging with the fandom for a pairing, whether it's as a producer of fan content or a consumer. In the latter case, you can absolutely pick and choose what you ship based on fan behavior, because fandom participation is always a choice.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't stop shipping my major ships if people got ridiculous about them. I would just disengage from the fandoms for them. However if it is a minor ship? That I like somewhat in that I will read fanfic and meta about them and reblog some pictures/fanart of them but I'm not hugely engaged? I've been totally turned off by fellow shippers before. Like Hannibal/Will on Hannibal. I thought they had an interesting dynamic and I liked seeing it explored. Then fluffy things and "murder family" took over and people got ridiculously obnoxious about the ship, so now I don't seek anything out about them anymore. I still think the dynamic is twisted and interesting, but I'd no longer call myself a shipper of them, even a casual one.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. I think in a particular time/place I could appreciate Johnlock, but there are so many batshit fans involved that it's completely turned me off the pairing.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-02 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I will be influenced if I'm on the edge about it.

Like I might have shipped Clintasha if the shippers weren't so militant about how she's a Tough Strong Grrl with a Dark Past, but utterly flawless and would never hurt a man's feefees or make a mistake.

Or in another the main female character is essentially Sergeant Calhoun from Wreck it Ralph, but the het side of fandom paints her as this delicate nurturing waifu who kisses foreheads and supports the men in everything and lets them lead her around by the hand. Instead of being the one who's usually yelling and waving a gun and telling everyone to MOVE before the whole place explodes, or literally dickpunching when someone screws up as she does in canon.

That makes me go from "Hey, this could be a cool ship, I should check it out..." to noping away pretty fast.

People use that excuse? really?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I "refuse" and "can't" really get affected too well by other fans' bullshit. I ship het and slash, happy in harmony.
So what if someone's interpretation of one of my fav ships is pretty effin shitty? As long as nothing forces me to care about them and their obnoxious interpretation and I can just ignore them peacefully I don't give a hoot. Then again, I'm rarely SO desperate of nice fanwork to look at or read that I just CAN NOT ignore bad fanwork. If everything else fails I have few awesome friends who are always ready to RP whatever ship we are craving at the moment.
I'm trying my hardest to imagine world where I cared what some stranger in interwebs thought about my shipping. Knowing myself, I think I would be troll enough to actually feel pretty smug about coming across that vile being to someone who doesn't even know me :DD
