Because people disagree with you, and think the movie is fine (and p funny)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
but it's just as racist and sexist as every other film made by some white guy who thinks if he can make enough of the audience laugh he can say whatever he wants.

it's not an ok thing, and I just don't get why no other 'funny' old hite male gets the same acceptance as this one.

If Mel brooks's films were made by anyone else we wouldn't let this stuff slide

Most people disagree with you, and so their actions follow the logic of those positions, and not the positions that you hold in your mind and want them to hold in their minds

it's not an ok thing, and I just don't get why no other 'funny' old hite male gets the same acceptance as this one.

their movies aren't considered as funny / good / obviously anti-racist

If Mel brooks's films were made by anyone else we wouldn't let this stuff slide

probably not, because they probably wouldn't be as funny / good / obviously anti-racist

Something being funny is subjective, though. somthing being racist is not.

People like Seth McFarlane are apparently 'funny' in too many peoples viewpoints. the men who make south park are lauded as 'funny'. we don't let them get away with this. Even the people who find them funny still consider them problematic, and we always call them out on it, which is right, but no-one calls brooks on his shit?

"obviously anti-racist" In what world can you say this? How it is obvious? It seems obvious to me that it is VERY racist.

They don't call him out on it, again, because they don't agree with you that it's racist. If they thought he was racist, they'd call him out, but they don't. It's not a complicated concept. You might think it was racist, but most people disagree, so they act like it's not racist.

So you clearly don't live on planet earth.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, hey, maybe I'm crazy for not thinking it's racist

i don't really give a shit

i'm just saying, you shouldn't be surprised that no one acts on an opinion that you hold and they don't really. no one calls mel brooks racist because they don't think he's racist.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
no one calls mel brooks racist because they don't think he's racist

Another very helpful comment.

What I want to know is WHY noone thinks he racist we he clearly is, and this would be very clear to everyone if he was doing the same stuff but was anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he's not 'clearly' a racist, or everyone would agree with you that he's a racist

which they don't

because they look at the things he's done and they say, okay, on balance that does not seem like the actions of a racist

it'd probably be more helpful if you could list the things that make him so obviously a racist, since (a) there are apparently so many of them that it's beyond argument and (b) you disagree with most people in the world on this one

HDU

DA
This particular Earthling doesn't always use telepathy to create the hive mind you keep mentioning. Maybe you are so belligerent sounding that people DON'T share their opinions with you on are regular basis.

Well, remember this movie was made in 1974? So considering that, it tries. Anyway, here's some examples:

Sheriff Bart: "'Scuse me while I whip this out."

[Audience pulls back in horror]

[Bart pulls out the decree and gives them all a sardonic look.]

-
Jim: [consoling Bart] What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? "Marry my daughter"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.
-
The movie is sending up white people's fear of the black man for the most part, using their ignorance against them. It uses the "mysterious stranger" western trope (Sheriff Bart) and then doubles it with the Gene Wilder character, turning it into a buddy movie. Kind of a rarity at the time. I think I'll give it a re-watch.

Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you understand the movie at all. It has lots of jokes about race... and subverting stereotypes. It's brilliant. A big reason behind that is because Gene Pryer--one of the most brilliant comedians of all time who is also black-- was one of the writers and Brooks recognized his genius.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU.
Apparently people are totally ignorant to Richard Pryor's and Mel Brooks' subversive comedy. This is a very sad thing. Has NO ONE also seen The Producers or History of The World Part 1? Springtime For Hitler is EXTREMELY subversive. It's a musical about Hitler but it's really about ripping him apart. The whole fact that the (spoilers lol) musical was a SUCCESS makes it even more subversive! That's just *one* example of what I'm talking about.

I understand the OPs complaints and I'm not saying some things are ok for white people to do, but I really believe Mel was always "in cahoots" with the black comics and actors he worked with. They were IN on the joke, so it's ok.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
You meant Richard Pryor.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, sorry. I was thinking Gene Wilder + Richard Pryor. *sigh* I am a doofus.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're not a doofus. It happens. :)
