Mel Brooks did not 'do it well'. This film is still extremely gross racist shit. why anyone ever gives this old white guy any more leniency than every other racist and sexist old white male is beyond me.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Because people disagree with you, and think the movie is fine (and p funny)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
but it's just as racist and sexist as every other film made by some white guy who thinks if he can make enough of the audience laugh he can say whatever he wants.

it's not an ok thing, and I just don't get why no other 'funny' old hite male gets the same acceptance as this one.

If Mel brooks's films were made by anyone else we wouldn't let this stuff slide

Most people disagree with you, and so their actions follow the logic of those positions, and not the positions that you hold in your mind and want them to hold in their minds

it's not an ok thing, and I just don't get why no other 'funny' old hite male gets the same acceptance as this one.

their movies aren't considered as funny / good / obviously anti-racist

If Mel brooks's films were made by anyone else we wouldn't let this stuff slide

probably not, because they probably wouldn't be as funny / good / obviously anti-racist

I don't think you understand the movie at all. It has lots of jokes about race... and subverting stereotypes. It's brilliant. A big reason behind that is because Gene Pryer--one of the most brilliant comedians of all time who is also black-- was one of the writers and Brooks recognized his genius.

Please don't make those kinds of offensive jokes, F!S is not an anti-Semitic space

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a safe space, either. And I don't think anon was joking.

Who the hell are you to say what FS is or isn't? Go back to bubblewrapped Tumblr.

Yes, and when he was making this film anti-Semitism was much more socially acceptable than it is today. I don't think you can really put him on the same level as other old white guys who have never faced that sort of bigotry in their lives.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
(Asking this seriously) -- Are you okay that old white guys made Django Unchained and 12 Years a Slave?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...a white guy didn't make 12 Years a Slave.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct! There are two Steve McQueens: the White one and the Black one! The Black one made 12 Years A Slave.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
*facepalm*

You realize that Mel Brooks did not write this entire film by himself.

Screenplay by

Andrew Bergman
Mel Brooks
Richard Pryor
Norman Steinberg
Al Uger

Could there be a clue somewhere in the above list? I wonderrrrrrrrrrrr

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
apparently (from an interview I was just reading) one of the first things Brooks said when he started working on the movie was "we need a black guy to validate any use of the N-word"

also, apparently Pryor was the one who wrote the "Mongo only pawn in game of life" gag.

god damn Richard Pryor was a genius

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yup brooks was totally not a racist piece of shit.

I am so sad tht my first exposure to Richard Pryor was through that godawful Superman film.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, what? no. That is a total mischaracterization of the interview I just watched. Mel would say, what about here, should we, shouldn't we (in terms of using that word) and Richard would *always* be pushing for it. And Mel said, "I think Richard was messing with me a lot, which was funny." But basically, Richard was being edgy and Mel was being more timid about the racial humor. The impression I'm getting from the interviews is that, though Mel was going for the transgressive angle, he didn't really have that much courage to follow through on the hard line jokes ("Can't you see that man is a ni-?"), so ultimately this was more Richard Pryor's movie about racism and Mel's movie about campfire fart jokes. That doesn't make Mel a racist, though. If anything, it makes him a NY liberal, which is what he was.

Thank you. I was just about to post this.

Plus, I also have the Mel Brooks collection, and there is an interview on there where he talks about the writing for the movie. Even back when they were writing it, Brooks was hella nervous about some of the racial content, specifically the frequent use of the n*-word, although at the same time he realized they couldn't do without it. He basically deferred to Richard Pryor, who was in reality the first among equals among the writers.

That's why The Waco Kid, Gene Wilder's character, never uses the n*-word. It's to signify that he's not racist or ignorant, unlike just about everyone else in the movie.

You're being kind of racist and ageist (and/or presentist) yourself here. At least you didn't call him a filthy Jew.

And don't give me that pap about how you can't be racist against white people. That's always been a dumb argument. Words have more than one meaning, and "racist" doesn't have to mean structural racism. Also, since you're condemning Mel Brooks for being personally racist, you're not even using the word to mean structural racism.

Mel Brooks did a lot of rude comedy. It was his stock in trade. I cringe at his sense of humour sometimes. (But I admit he and Cleavon Little did a good job with the race jokes in this movie.)

But an old man from a privileged background making tacky jokes does not justify your categorical condemnation of his work--just for being a privileged old white man.

Thank you for saying this! It boggles my mind how somehow the definition put forward by a university prof (power+privilege) has somehow become the de facto definition in the past few years.

So many times, I've seen arguments about racism go round and round in circles, because one set of people is using the p+p=r definition, and the other is simply going with the "discriminating on the basis of race" definition. And some people end up using it as a card to defend shitty behavior.

Instead of arguing semantics, it would be easier if everyone would stop being assholes. Gotta be honest, though: that'll never happen.

You're an idiot. Check out the writing credits for this movie again once you get your head out of Tumblr.

Dumb ass. The butt of every single race joke in that movie was the white people. I'm sorry that you're so stupid. You should stay inside where things are safe and soft.

Black man here, way too late. I love this movie. I think it's damn funny and makes great points about race. I don't know if you're white or black or whatever but I think you're just uncomfortable with black culture. That's racist. (Not really but it's still really bad.)
