[Blazing Saddles]

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Mel Brooks did not 'do it well'. This film is still extremely gross racist shit. why anyone ever gives this old white guy any more leniency than every other racist and sexist old white male is beyond me.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Because people disagree with you, and think the movie is fine (and p funny)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
but it's just as racist and sexist as every other film made by some white guy who thinks if he can make enough of the audience laugh he can say whatever he wants.

it's not an ok thing, and I just don't get why no other 'funny' old hite male gets the same acceptance as this one.

If Mel brooks's films were made by anyone else we wouldn't let this stuff slide

*facepalm*

You realize that Mel Brooks did not write this entire film by himself.

Screenplay by

Andrew Bergman
Mel Brooks
Richard Pryor
Norman Steinberg
Al Uger

Could there be a clue somewhere in the above list? I wonderrrrrrrrrrrr

You're being kind of racist and ageist (and/or presentist) yourself here. At least you didn't call him a filthy Jew.

And don't give me that pap about how you can't be racist against white people. That's always been a dumb argument. Words have more than one meaning, and "racist" doesn't have to mean structural racism. Also, since you're condemning Mel Brooks for being personally racist, you're not even using the word to mean structural racism.

Mel Brooks did a lot of rude comedy. It was his stock in trade. I cringe at his sense of humour sometimes. (But I admit he and Cleavon Little did a good job with the race jokes in this movie.)

But an old man from a privileged background making tacky jokes does not justify your categorical condemnation of his work--just for being a privileged old white man.

You're an idiot. Check out the writing credits for this movie again once you get your head out of Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Dumb ass. The butt of every single race joke in that movie was the white people. I'm sorry that you're so stupid. You should stay inside where things are safe and soft.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Black man here, way too late. I love this movie. I think it's damn funny and makes great points about race. I don't know if you're white or black or whatever but I think you're just uncomfortable with black culture. That's racist. (Not really but it's still really bad.)

One of these days I'll have to watch some of Mel's stuff.

Also, why does Hollywood keep allowing Adam Sandler to make movies? Are his movies really bringing in that much money?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I may have Nostalgia Goggles, but I love Mel Brooks' stuff something fierce. Please watch it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Adam Sandler is a really, really, REALLY good friend, A lot of his friends are vary powerful Hollywood elite who sometimes bad judgement.

I think you have the picture.

the answer is Hollywood doesn't have to "allow" Adam Sandler to make movies since he owns his own production company. it doesn't matter how badly his shitty comedy movies tank over and over again, he just finances another one.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
If you've never seen History of the World Part I, stop whatever you're doing right now and go get it. If for no other reason than that Madeline Kahn was a fucking genius,

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think people on both extreme ends of the issue need to remember that there is a difference between making fun of other races vs. making fun of racist stereotypes, racists, and racism in general. The former is racist, the latter is at least neutral if not fully anti-racist, although it can sometimes be done clumsily to the point where it is just as ineffective and offensive.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to make this exact comment. I believe Blazing Saddles is only truly offensive if you can't tell the difference.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I love Blazing Saddles, but I think a lot of people don't get that you couldn't make it today. Or think it's a problem that you couldn't make it today. The thing is, Blazing Saddles was incredibly transgressive for its time. It's important. It highlighted and made fun of the ridiculousness of racism!

But we've also progressed as a society.

We can still love Blazing Saddles, or movies like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but realize their cultural and historical context, and the fact that today's cultural context is not the same. The jokes that were a slap in the face for racists in the 70s are just racist today. And that's okay!

It's a fantastic movie, but it is also a product of its time.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes thank you for this

(Anonymous) 2015-07-03 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* Blazing Saddles was made in 1974.

So were films like Foxy Brown, Black Godfather, Black Samson -- and The Klansman.

1974 was also the year that civil right leader W S McIntosh was killed in Dayton, that Heuey Lewis was arrested for murder (and passed leadership of the Black Panthers to Elaine Brown).

That a film showed white townspeople ultimately cheering the leadership of a black sheriff was DAMN transgressive at the time.

Agreed. Mel Brooks stuff was funny, sweet and poignant.
