I'm honestly just intrigued by this ship because I like creepy. I'm not interested in romanticization of it. I want their creepy obsession with each other. I want Hannibal to want to eat him. I want all the horror.

Yeah, the fact that they're more obsessed with each other than ever is super intriguing to me. Romantic or not, and as ridiculously fucked up as it is either way, I totally love their relationship.

vague spoilers

After what happened last season I seriously thought Will was going to be less...fond of Hannibal, but despite some anger he's (obviously rightly) carrying with him, he's still obsessed. (Like you say, more than ever.)

And he was so wistful at the start of the season about 'what could have been' that I can't find it anything but incredibly fascinating.

Poor Will is fucked up beyond belief but it's kind of delicious.

Plus, we basically got a love confession from Hannibal, so that was fun.

Oh, this weird show.

Seriously, like, this ship is everything I like. I love creepy. I love unhealthy obsessions. I love villains corrupting heroes. I hate how romanticized it sometimes gets in fics because that seems to be misssing the point and what is actually fun about the ship.

I tried to read a couple fics for it, but apparently me and the fandom don't have much in common when it comes to why we like this pairing! I just couldn't really find anything I liked, which was sort of disappointing (though I didn't dig very deep, to be fair).

I agree, actually. There is so little in the fandom that I actually like. It is depressing and I wonder if we've actually been watching the same show. What about Hannibal/Will actually strikes anyone as being romantic?

It's actually somewhat rare that I ship a pairing this unhealthy but something about it works for me. It feels natural in canon, you know? The writing is good, the acting and chemistry are great, and the execution is just solid. It's a perfect combination of things that interest me when done right and in a way that is self-aware. I like that about the pairing too...the show isn't trying to make Hannibal out as some sort of hero, and it readily says that this relationship is wrong. Will himself realizes it, too.

As for the fandom side of things, I haven't read fic, but I do find the fandoms sense of humor to be pretty golden.

It's an extremely dark love story, romantic or no, and very sad when you think of how withdrawn Will was from other people when we met him. He's probably never had a close friend in his life, and here comes Hannibal, who's fascinated and not creeped out and genuinely enjoys his company. It's hard to let that go, and they're going to be pursuing each other in one way or another for the rest of the story regardless, and it's glorious. I'm a happily ever after type with shipping myself, so I can't get invested in it as a primarily romantic relationship when Hannibal is so fundamentally untrustworthy and I don't want to see Will corrupted forever, but I get it. They'd have incredible sex and lots of evil funtimes until one of them killed the other, at least. Then there'd be even more pining!

=looks at the .gif= OK, how in the world is this show NOT considered to be a festival of gaybaiting by anyone who watches it?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I would guess the showrunner being a gay man has something to do with it. Straight dude showrunners get all "no homo" when people ask them about queerbaiting, while Bryan Fuller is usually in "sure, what not?" mode.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well for starts it's so fucked up that you wouldn't really want them to ~date~. It is intentionally homoerotic, but no one is really being strung along with the expectation of Hannibal and Will bumping uglies.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's straight-up gay subtext (actually at this point it's just text). Not queerbaiting. Very very different from queerbaiting. And I wish fandom would stop using terms they don't understand to throw hissy fits about shipping.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, if they're still afraid to go anywhere but there, it's queerbaiting. I don't care if Harvey Firestein himself is the showrunner.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Pardon me, I meant if they're still afraid to go there, not anywhere but there.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. This pairing is inherently very abusive/Stockholm Syndrome-ridden and by S3 everyone has called out on Will of his unhealthy obsession with Hannibal, in the show or meta. Part of me honestly feel bad for Will because this guy's really got stuck in a really creepy relationship with Hannibal, but yeaah, as everyone has said above, there's something romantic about that.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh same dude. It's fucked up and terrible but it's also like...breathtakingly romantic and I am simply not equipped to not LOVE IT

Just want to chime in and say that I love Hannibal/Will. That's all.
