I suppose part of my problem is that I feel like giving Sharon a straight up "good guy" storyline will make her redundant in the context of the story.

If she's Steve's ally, one of the SHIELD agents that stayed loyal to Fury and fights on his side, well, how does that make her significantly different than, say, Maria Hill?

If, as in the comics, she becomes Steve's love interest, then we get a very similar story to Peggy's. Steve meets a government agent named Carter and falls in love with her and they fight side by side.

Plus, it kind of bothers me, honestly, that so far women in the MCU have ONLY been on the side of good, really.

And I feel like Sharon could be really good for showcasing a villain of moral complexity (instead of someone like Brock Rumlow whose just straight up evil). With her having watched Peggy dedicate her life to SHIELD but see it infiltrated by Hydra anyway. I think there's a really good arc that could be done about the tragedy of cynicism in the modern age.

well, how does that make her significantly different than, say, Maria Hill?

You seem to be reeeeally focused on really broad-stroke "Roles" rather than actual, you know. Characterisation. There is actually room in storytelling for more than one ticky-box on each side.

Her romance with Steve (should one ever happen) is only automatically "a very similar story to Peggy's" if you think that "meets agent named Carter, falls in love, fights side by side with" is all there was to Steve and Peggy to start with. That's not actually characterisation, or even story-telling: that's a ticky box. It's really, really shallow.

It's like these aren't characters with actual stories, they're archetype-ciphers, and you see nothing else to them. People who actually really love a character? Aren't gonna appreciate that.

His relationship with Peggy is, in itself, a complication that could be interesting to work with if he has one with Sharon.

AYRT seriously. With the usual proviso of "if handled well" (which always applies and I'm not saying MCU is GONNA, but I wouldn't trust them to handle a redeemed-HYDRA-agent plot well EITHER, so that's a moot point), that is a HUGE wrinkle to deal with in a relationship and a source of very genuine tension that doesn't even require either character to be cuddling the idiot ball to play with! - making it very rare among fictional romantic complications.

Heh...'cuddling the idiot ball' I like that phrasing. And, yeah, if handled well, but I think that's really an understood caveat in all these discussions.

The more I'm thinking about what you're writing, the more it's actually coming across as kinda sexist.

You're basically looking at female characters as nothing more than tropes or tabs to fit into slots. "We already have a female on the side of good! It doesn't make sense to have another one!" Where are your complaints about all of the good male characters? Aren't they redundant? I mean, there's a whole shit-ton of them. Shouldn't we only have one, maybe two?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really...

It's more that I'm kind of annoyed how ALL MCU female characters are good.

Plus, note the example I used below of how storyline-wise, the man-wanting-to-follow-in-his-noble-dead-father's-footsteps is one I am sick of because, regardless of how well it's done, it's been done SO MUCH before.

Like Nebula?

Yes, there could always be more female villains, and she didn't have a lot to do in her movie, but she exists.

And not for nothing, but Gamora started out on the villian side of the ledger too in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Not OP

The other characters aren't as redundant because they all have a different power set. The ones that are similar (like Tony and Rhodey) have very different personalities and roles. Honestly I don't know much about Sharon in the comics, but so far in the movies, all we know about her is she's tough, she stands up for what's right, and she's a good shot. Natasha thinks she's nice. So far, there's nothing in her skill set or personality that sets her apart.

We can assume (hope?) that Civil War is going to develop her as a character and give her interesting things to do, but until then, at least Sharon as HYDRA is a creative angle to explore.

Though it's not true that MCU doesn't have female villains, AoS has had a few (Jiaying, Raina, Lorelei, Kara). Maya was sort of bad in IM3. If we're going to have a female villain in the movies, I hope she's of the Big Bad variety. Not that I know enough about the comics to suggest.
