People get way too offended over ships. I'm sure your childhood will survive if someone ships two characters from a show you liked as a child.

Right? Just today I was randomly wondering if people shipped characters from Rugrats. I looked for it and lo behold, they do. Childhood status: unruined.

It's far less disturbing to know the ship exists then to go see the pictures.

You know your curious now.

Warning: Click on that, you deserve what you see.

I've known stuff like this existed since I was old enough to search for porn. Sites in the 90s always seemed to have a 'toon section. Nothing like being 11 and watching a poorly animated gif of Fred Flintstone rawing Sailor Moon for the first time.

That one I missed! But I did see Goku doing the same

Oh no! Badly drawn porn. I am triggered!
Nah, seriously I was 13 and accidentally stumbling on all sorts of shit when I was looking up my favorite shows. It didn't ruin my childhood. It didn't effect me at all. I just learned to avoid certain keywords and scroll past stuff I didn't want to see.
Hardly the mental trauma some people claim they get at the mention of certain ships.

Ok, the All Grown Up spin off versions I can understand, but the actual baby versions?!?! I like rule 34 but holy shit, porn of 1, 2 and 3 year olds? :O (It finally happened, something R34 related has broken me.)

My childhood remains uncrucified despite knowing that some people are shipping Bert and Ernie RIGHT NOW.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, I thought that was canon anyway.

I rather suspect it might have been canon in a different cultural climate. I read about this recently and I think Sesame Street issued a WOG statement that they are just best friends and roommates, but I can easily see how one would interpret them as being partners.

Maybe I am showing my age here, but I always thought of them as Sesame Street's version of The Odd Couple. Bert is/was Felix (neat and uptight) and Ernie is/was Oscar (messy and relaxed and one to go with the flow.)

And while maybe if they debuted today they would be a couple I tend to think that if/when Sesame Street tackles same sex couples it will more through the a new younger muppet who has two moms or two dads. Or at least that is how I hope they do given the target viewership is preschool kids. It would nice from them to have a family on the show that reflects their home life in at least some ways.

Oh, I don't think they'll retcon Ernie and Bert, nor do I necessarily think they should. It's kinda cute to see them that way now, though. Nothing wrong with an alternate interpretation of canon after all :)

I agree with both of these thoughts.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
they're suppose to be brothers

even though as a child i thought they were an old married couple

I think that ship's cute

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-07-04 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

Hell, I was shipping when I was a kid anyway. Didn't necessarily understand it at the time, but I'm sure if I went back and rewatched a lot of those older shows I would find plenty to ship.

[personal profile] nightscale 2015-07-04 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I used to ship things when I was a kid before I realised what I was doing, and finding out that people ship things from my childhood that I didn't? Meh, doesn't phase me.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-05 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I remember when I was 13 and just discovered the internet not knowing anything of ships or porn featuring characters of my favorite shows/games and I stumbled on a lot of nsfw accidentally. Somehow I am still here today.

Of course that was before the words 'problematic' and 'triggered' were popular to throw around in fandom.

People need to not go on the internet if they are so delicate that the thought of people shipping two fictional characters is so mentally crushing.
