I hate to say you missed the whole point

but you kind of missed the whole point

I mean Bing Bong was a bit aggravating I give you but he was like a 2-yr-old's imaginary friend, he wasn't gonna be Shakespeare.

OP.

Just because it's a kid's character doesn't mean it has to be some obnoxious, clown hobo. The rocket to the moon is great, the imagination is great, in theory, forgetting about one's imaginary friend is tragic, but the character himself annoyed me. If it were, say, Mike or Sully, then it would have been heartbreaking.

As for Sadness, I just couldn't stand her voice. Yes, I get it, she's sad and sulky and post-tears nasal drip. But listening to it for 90 minutes made me hate her.

And seeing all the praise and "PIXAR'S BACK!", I'm just thinking "really?". I compare it to Toy Story 3, which told a similar story about growing up and coming of age and leaving your childhood behind, and it made me actual ugly-cry in the theatre.

I did really like Riley. I liked Panic, Disgust and Anger. Joy was fine too, but these two, ugh!

Funny you said that about sadness, because I saw it on my languague and her voice didn't sound like that (I did find her a bit annoying at first, tho, same with Joy)

Wow. The only one you left unshaded is the only character I found annoying. Hated Joy. You're entitled to your opinions, though.

What was annoying is stereotypically plump bespectacled girl being the synbol of sadness. The dad's emotion avatars wearing 'stashes while mom's wore pink glasses. Not to mention dad thinking about sport 24/7 and being the angry parent. So stereotypical. Also wtf with Disgust being the main emotion, I wondered about it before seeing the movie. The imaginary friend is also a stereotype personified. In RL it's not all that common.

It's actually based on an existing six-emotion model by Paul Ekman. They got rid of surprise because that was too difficult to make work with the story.

Interesting!

I agree about the annoying stereotypes re weight and gender. Sigh. Took me out of the movie.

Yeah, alas.

They based Sadness' appearance off Phyllis Smith, who voices her.

I like the theory that, as Riley becomes more sure of who she is, her emotions will look more like her, like the emotions of the adult characters.

Anger's voice actor also wears glasses...

Maybe they'll wear a hockey uniform. )

...Except in this movie Sadness wasn't portrayed as being a "bad" emotion, and was in fact necessary to Riley's mental health?

People who levy this criticism often seem to completely miss the point of the movie. Joy might be more conventionally attractive in terms of design, but she wasn't necessarily a "good" emotion when left to her own devices, and was in fact stunting Riley's growth by acting the way she did.

yeah.

I didn't look up reactions to this movie until after I watched it, so I was surprised at all the hostility to Bing-Bong. He seems preferable to, say, Olaf from Frozen.

As for the emotions, you could launch complaints at all five of them. They're not the most well-balanced characters if left to their own devices. (Which is kind of the point.)

This is the first time I've ever seen someone not love Bing Bong, actually.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't take the imaginary friend seriously as a character ever because all I can think of is 'the Bing Bong Brothers'.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
you might like my penis

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't find Bing Bong too annoying, he was just kind of 'eh'. But I was surprised at how much I teared up when he sacrificed himself. @_@ I think it was more what the scene itself symbolised rather than being sad for the character though.
