What was annoying is stereotypically plump bespectacled girl being the synbol of sadness. The dad's emotion avatars wearing 'stashes while mom's wore pink glasses. Not to mention dad thinking about sport 24/7 and being the angry parent. So stereotypical. Also wtf with Disgust being the main emotion, I wondered about it before seeing the movie. The imaginary friend is also a stereotype personified. In RL it's not all that common.

It's actually based on an existing six-emotion model by Paul Ekman. They got rid of surprise because that was too difficult to make work with the story.

Interesting!

I agree about the annoying stereotypes re weight and gender. Sigh. Took me out of the movie.

Yeah, alas.

They based Sadness' appearance off Phyllis Smith, who voices her.

I like the theory that, as Riley becomes more sure of who she is, her emotions will look more like her, like the emotions of the adult characters.

Anger's voice actor also wears glasses...

Maybe they'll wear a hockey uniform. )

...Except in this movie Sadness wasn't portrayed as being a "bad" emotion, and was in fact necessary to Riley's mental health?

People who levy this criticism often seem to completely miss the point of the movie. Joy might be more conventionally attractive in terms of design, but she wasn't necessarily a "good" emotion when left to her own devices, and was in fact stunting Riley's growth by acting the way she did.

yeah.
