I dislike this circular argument about drugs. Drugs are bad cos they're illegal!

Most of the harm/related crime/death from illegal drugs, imo, comes from drugs being illegal. Treating them as a health issue is imo a much more sensible approach.

It's not a circular argument - it's being realistic about the world we live in. And we live in a world where, mostly, hard drugs are criminalized and are often linked to crime organization, drug cartels etc.

Yes, I agree that a lot of the trouble with drugs comes from the criminalization - and the decriminalization of drugs is certainly a valid argument to be had.

But, Walter White does not live in a magical future where drugs are legal. He lives in a world where it leads to him escalating to murder quite quickly.

So, in the context of the show, and the context of the fandom: if you don't see what's wrong with it, you're probably being intentionally obtuse.

AYRT In the context of fandom, then yeah, fair enough.

Meth is way too dangerous to be legalized even in the hyperthetical happy magical future, IMO.

I can see people making a case for weed and some of the lighter drugs, but meth? that's legit dangerous

Except what Kallanda is saying isn't a circular argument. Drugs are illegal, plain point of fact. It's one thing to make/sell drugs, but that they're illegal requires them to be underground and out of sight, and some very bad people thrive in that environment, especially when large amounts of money are involved. (See the history of the cocaine business and the people running it.)

They're illegal for a good reason: because there is a very high probability that they will quite literally ruin your life via addiction.

No one ever starts out taking drugs intending to become addicted, but that is what happens a vast majority of the time. People always think it won't happen to them, that they'll be able to control it, and then it does. Drugs are a dangerous, highly addictive substance.

Sigh. And criminalisation has been shown NOT TO WORK. Treat it as a health issue, because at least then harm minimisation comes into effect. You know, like alcohol or cigarettes or sugar or whatever. People don't have to hide so much.

Well, legalizing (some) drugs may help against drug related crime, but it may not help that much in any other respect.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
so because you think it doesn't work, they should just shrug their shoulders and make dangerous drugs legal? i don't think so.

the fact that drugs are illegal is a deterrent to many people who might otherwise try them. i'd call that working.

Except there's NO GOOD, SAFE WAY TO TAKE IT.
