Worst Fictional Dad?

[personal profile] takaraikarin 2015-07-15 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Was having a discussion with a friend. We're stuck on Ikari Gendoh being the worst of all, but I'm sure there are other examples.

Thoughts?

An obvious one: Odin from the Thor MCU movies. (Only familiar with him second-hand, though).

Roose Bolton from ASoIaF

Odin doesn't seem to be that terrible of a father. He's pretty okay in the movies, IMO. Rather strict, sure, but then his sons thought destroying worlds for bragging rights was a-okay.

But then I only know movie!Odin.

Someone else who knows movie Odin: he should have told Loki a lot sooner, shouldn't have made it out that there was preferential treatment because of heirdom, etc. He made a lot of mistakes that were really fucking stupid that fed into Loki's complex about not fitting in.

it would be difficult to argue that he's literally the BEST fictional dad, but he's nowhere near being the worst. There are some pretty shitty fictional parents out there

If you've never seen the movies, you're in no position to call Odin an obvious choice.

LOL, I'd have loved to have Odin and Frigga as my parents. Their sons are privileged fuckers who didn't realize how good they had it.

I second Roose. And throw in Tywin Lannister and Randyll Tarly in the pile. And maybe Robert Baratheon. And I guess now Stannis.

Re: Worst Fictional Dad?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Stannis. He went from being more or less the best dad in Westeros (...not that that's saying much) to being the worst in less than the span of an episode. Damn, Stannis.

Mr. Leahy and Gerard Argent (Teen Wolf). John Winchester (SPN) runs a close second.

I think John Winchester is debatable, the first season gave an impression he was trying to do his best but was doing a very faulty job at it. Later seasons started blackening his name, talking up how bad he was a lot more.

This. While he's not exactly father of the year, I think John is a lot more complex than Gerard and Mr. Lahey who were almost cartoonishly awful people with not a lot of grey area

I haven't seen the UK version if that's the one you're referring to, but Mickey's dad in the US version is a straight up monster (Frank is pretty horrible too of course)

John Winchester. He boils my blood.

I don't understand how anyone can think he was even a remotely good father. People try to say that the show tried to get the ''he was doing his best'' point across in the first couple of seasons, but in season one, his children called him when they were at their lowest, begging for help, and he flat out ignored them.

There's a flashback of him leaving his very young children in a motel alone for days without enough food and then severely emotionally damaging his ten year old son for something that was not his fault. He was called when his son was literally dying of a damaged, weak heart, and he ignored it completely.

He was a neglectful, verbally abusive sack of shit father. And no, he did not try his best. He needlessly put young children in a toxic, harmful environment and left his older son to raise his younger son. He did not try at all.

Yeah, this. I think they even showed him as a bad father in season one, too. He was never good. He was so obsessed with revenge for his wife that he didn't care about the kids she left behind.
