I was under the impression that it was because most of fandom in general is straight women and almost all the characters are female. Though being afraid of turning into the next bronies sounds like a reasonable fear.

I was under the impression that it was because most of fandom in general is straight women and almost all the characters are female.

Let's unpack this.

First: where are you getting this statistic that most of the fandom in general is straight women?

Second: Why would you assume a fandom full of straight women would never ship f/f pairings? There are a hell of a lot of straight female korrasami approvers.

Possible third: Plenty of straight women are okay with media that portrays lesbian relationships. Hell, my mom's straight as a rail and not exactly progressive but she sure likes Orphan Black.

I'm getting it from my personal experience in fandom, as it happens, because the majority of people I've encountered who are actively involved in fandom are women. Maybe the majority of them aren't straight, I've never actually taken a formal poll on their sexualities, but female identified has been the majority in the thirteen years I've been hanging around fandom circles, and the majority of them are into men in some way, shape, or form. Maybe the majority of them are bi, who knows.

Again, personal experience in fandom, since the vast majority of fic tends to be M/M in nature, and of the handful of men I know in fandoms in general, the only one of them who writes fic at all (let alone slash fic) is me. I never said it would never happen, just that I've noticed that it doesn't, and I tend to assume that's the reason.

Have you not seen the show?

It has canon f/f relationships so it probably has more lesbian/bi fans than the fandom's you're thinking about

What the Anon who responded to you said, plus:

Okay, yeah, into men in some way does not mean they aren't somehow into women. And on top of that--you don't need to be into women to ship women! They're cartoon characters to begin with! And at least in my experience straight women seem to be much cooler with f/f ships than straight guys with m/m--and even THEN, a hell of a lot of straight guys into cartoons don't mind that at all.

I think if you're looking at a community of people who are into a Rebecca Sugar cartoon you have to expect them to be cool with certain things.

I think you have a good point (and the argument aenrhien is making is not a compelling one) but I do think that it's true that (a) fandom - at least the fic-writing, shippy part of fandom - is overwhelmingly demographically female and (b) that part of fandom also tends to be significantly more centered around sexual and romantic in dudes than anything else.

I think where the argument goes wrong is in eliding the fact that fandom is made of individuals and is not just an aggregate - that there are many different subpockets and groups within fandom, and that people can be interested in multiple things, and all of that.

...I'm a straight (ASEXUAL!) woman, and I have zero problems shipping f/f.

Literally no excuse.

>straight
>asexual

Choose one.

da
Asexuals can be in romantic relationships you know. Just, uh, without the sex part.
I am mostly attracted to men but when it comes to the act of sex I have no desire for it.

Not really.

Do you just hold hands and shit and the second your "sexual" partner gets bedroom thoughts and wants to make out, shout "THIS IS TOO INTIMATE!!!!!!" and cry?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-18 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
