People can be pretty judgmental.

I think part of your issues stem from this community having a lot of anon users. Here's the thing about secrets: people generally won't bother to comment unless the secret is meaningful to them in some way. I mean, sure, there are trolls and people who reply to themselves. But there are a lot of anon users, a lot, and the majority of them aren't going to care one way or another about any one secret, but you are going to get the ones for whom your secret is a hot-button issue to comment and yeah it can seem like a lot if 30 or 40 are commenting, but I don't think it is anywhere near a majority. As for why people tend to go with the worst interpretations, well, these are secrets and I'm guessing people believe it's a secret for a more compelling reason.

This. I mean, people may try their hardest to search for reasons why a secret might be controversial but that's because... most secrets are really mild and boring. Like, they aren't actually secrets, and in that sense, there's not much fun in commenting. It's more fun to read into things and make a bigger issue out of whatever that person is posting. It's theatrical, taking everything to the max, but that's kind of the game we play here.

And for the record, I don't think people here are generally mean or nasty. Maybe a bit dramatic, at worst. But OP's secret definitely relates to being "a bit dramatic" ;)
