[Holly Madison, Girls Next Door]

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed her book. Yeah, iut had tons of behind the scenes gossip and dirt but it was also more insightful than I expected and I came away from it with a lot more sympathy for her than I got from the show. Hefner, on the other hand, sounds like a terrible person, which makes me sad because he doesn't necessarily come off that way in Girls Next Door. I feel so naive! :(

Spoilers: Major shade thrown at Kendra and Criss Angel (LOL!) but I was really pleased to find out that Bridget is a sweetheart.

You are surprised that he's a douche? The show may try to make him out to be nice, but every single article about him has made it absolutely clear that he's a horrible human being.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he's ridiculous and vain, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
ikr? it cracked me up a while back when there was this tumblr post with a ton of notes floating around that praised playboy and hugh hefner for being so progressive and feminist. lol right.

W H A T?

Do you honestly think that everyone who's seen the show also dutifully reads every single Hugh Hefner article? I'm not sure that's a reasonable assumption to make. I watch lots of television where I might like a character, but I have no idea what the actor is like in real life. Reality TV is so fake, it's not that far removed from playing a character because whatever you see onscreen is not the real person, it's a version of themselves for reality TV.

this was my thinking. how are we assuming OP had consumed any outside information?

I don't know, there are still plenty of articles that paint him favorably though. I've even seen people try to push a "playboy is feminist" angle.

And considering we're living in the age of the Cosby controversy where is all the outrage at Hefner and what he's done to women? He's given women the same drugs Cosby did.

Choice feminism at it's finest.

He's given women the same drugs Cosby did

He's white. Also, his victims are all tarts so no-one cares. The women who he abuses would all be far too easy for any defence to paint as the wrong kind of woman so why even bother. There will be no justice for Hefner until he's dead, and the devil looks after his own I'm afraid.

I haven't read the book, but I used to get trapped into watching this show with my mom and sister and Holly and Madison were always my favorites (although I did like Kendra too tbh for her goofiness). I know it was dumb, probably mostly scripted reality tv, but they just seemed like fun people. The new girls in season six were just so awful though (plus there was a really creepy incest-y vibe with the fact that he was dating the twins...no thanks)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The new girls were awful. :( I couldn't watch the show after that.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The twins were the worst. The previous seasons were dumb, but the hijinks were at least amusing and Holly, Madison, and Kendra had actual personalities. When the focus was on the twins and the other woman (they were all so dull that I honestly have no idea what any of their names are anymore), the show was pretty much unwatchable

I kind of like that the Girls Next Door with the new cast flopped because they always tried to tell the girls they were "replaceable" (so they could treat them like crap) and it turns out that wasn't true at all.

No one was watching GND for Hef, people caught on to the personalities of the girls.

Hefner is an abusive asshole and I can't deal with people who try to paint him as otherwise.

I enjoyed Holly's book as well, I feel like a lot of criticisms coming out against her are from people who either didn't read or fully understand the book. She fully takes the responsibility that these were her life choices and she's not even that harsh to other women in the book (she even says that ultimately all the women at the mansion are damaged and Hef takes advantage of that, so you can tell she has sympathy even for some of the women she doesn't like.)

I really don't understand how the things Hefner does is legal either. He essentially has contracts to trap women in the mansion and not let them have any freedom. I still can't believe they didn't even get paid for the first season of GND.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's legal in the sense that you're being paid for your services. If you don't want to follow his rules (which were shitty), you leave and do not get paid. It's abusive and crappy, but it's not illegal. They got screwed on the reality TV deal, but that's a separate issue.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me :(

Like, since people were talking about the twins earlier in the thread, how fucked up does your life have to be that you become willing to do sexually provocative photo shoots with your own twin sister so that dudes can jerk off to the thought of incest and then date a creepy old guy along with that same sister? That's messed up. I always felt especially sorry for them.

Hefner built his brand on exploiting women and you didn't think he'd be a total jerk?

I'm not at all familiar with whatever show it was that OP watched, but it's quite possible they painted him in a much different light, and they might not have had any outside info at that point.

...that actually looks kinda interesting.

Huh.

Anyone else read this?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
I did. Like OP said there is a lot of gossip and I wouldn't call the book high art but it's an interesting read for sure. I think it's good insight into what possesses these young women to go for playboy and what keeps them there.

Since Hef so often silences the women who live at the playboy mansion, I think it's great to hear their side of the story (Holly's is the first book I've read but there have been others.)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I did. It makes more sense if you've seen the show or are familiar with the concept, but even if you aren't, I suppose it's still a good behind the scenes look into the making of reality TV and how the whole "girlfriend" thing with Hefner worked. The author doesn't go into much graphic detail about the sex, but then others have already written about how that worked.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Was anyone surprised to learn that Hefner was a rapist?

I mean really? Anyone?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
Are we seriously going to take one of Hef's playboy whores seriously? Pfft... please.
