I haven't read the book, but I used to get trapped into watching this show with my mom and sister and Holly and Madison were always my favorites (although I did like Kendra too tbh for her goofiness). I know it was dumb, probably mostly scripted reality tv, but they just seemed like fun people. The new girls in season six were just so awful though (plus there was a really creepy incest-y vibe with the fact that he was dating the twins...no thanks)

The new girls were awful. :( I couldn't watch the show after that.

The twins were the worst. The previous seasons were dumb, but the hijinks were at least amusing and Holly, Madison, and Kendra had actual personalities. When the focus was on the twins and the other woman (they were all so dull that I honestly have no idea what any of their names are anymore), the show was pretty much unwatchable

I kind of like that the Girls Next Door with the new cast flopped because they always tried to tell the girls they were "replaceable" (so they could treat them like crap) and it turns out that wasn't true at all.

No one was watching GND for Hef, people caught on to the personalities of the girls.

Now that you mention it, I barely even remember him being on the show. It seemed like they would wake him up from his nap every once in a while so that could shuffle around and fondle women, but I don't remember him doing all that much (dude was feeble as fuck).

Well pretty much, but the whole claim they tried to make when they didn't pay Holly, Bridget and Kendra was that they were "replaceable" because "people would be watching for Hefner/his lifestyle."

Of course after the first season aired it became obvious that people really liked the girls. Though with Hef's ego he still thought it was about him so he probably thought he could easily recreate the trio and continue the show after they left.

According to Holly's book Hefner really doesn't do much, like what he did on the show was even more then what he normally does because he was trying to put forth a certain image.

What were they getting out of it if they didn't get paid?

The first season? IDK, nothing? They got paid their normal "salary" for being girlfriends but they didn't get paid for their television appearance at all.

According to Holly's book Hefner kept a tight leash and didn't like giving girls too much because he knew if they had too much money they would leave.

When GND was a success the girls had more pull and were able to get more out of later seasons. But they didn't get paid for the first season at all.

Beyond the money they earn from being a girlfriend, nothing. Fame, I guess. Reality TV is (sadly) a semi-legit stepping stone for people who want to to work in entertainment. It doesn't work for everyone, obviously, but it gives you an edge over a complete nobody with no name recognition.
