Favorite Movie/TV Trailers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say I really liked the use of the Of Monsters and Men song in the trailer for The Good Dinosaur (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-RgquKVTPE), and it got me thinking about how much I love good trailers. The movie can turn out to be complete shit, but trailers can be amazing. Two more of my favorites are the trailers for:

Where the Wild Things Are (and I absolutely hated that movie through and through. Fantastic trailer though):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNJPSc_4RCI

The Legend of Korra, Season 4 (I really wish I could find some covert video from when this was first shown at Comicon, I'm the anon that loves hearing audiences go crazy):

Making trailers is an art, so post some of your favorite examples!

(As a personal request I ask that you please don't just paste in youtube links without including the name of the property.)

IA with AOU, Inception and Watchmen. All excellent trailers.

The AOU trailer was downright outstanding... that song sent shivers down my spine. Just wish the actual film had lived up to it.

Alien -- possibly the greatest trailer of all time.

I love all the 80s ones which are basically plot synopsis, they let you know if the story is going to be worth the ticket.

In a world...

The first Hobbit trailer:

I just love the song and the whole feel of it. It got me so pumped.

(Of course then the movies were crap...)

I still feel that the movies had good parts, but imo the first film was by far the best; the others were messes, even if entertaining at times. The trailer was lovely though, and probably raised expectations too much.

I agree. After the first movie, I still felt good about the franchise. But the second one really killed it for me.

But I still love this trailer.

As much as I love elves, there was way too much focus on elves in the last two Hobbit films. And DOS was much longer than it needed to be.

For me, it wasn't so much the focus on the elves but that nothing was tied together. None of the characters had arcs. They didn't even bother to tell us what happened to the arkenstone in the end or show the end of the battle. The movies were one action scene after another at the expense of story and characterization. The dialogue was cringe-worthy in places. The characters could've been really fleshed out, but they were all caricatures instead.

I had hoped that stretching the movies into three films would allow the filmmakers the opportunity to really explore the 13 dwarves, the complexities of someone like Thranduil, or events like Dol Guldor But they didn't do any of that, which felt like such a waste of time then.

I mostly agree, but I still thought that the dwarves fared better in the films than in the novel. Even if they didn't get much screen-time or character development, they were still mostly more memorable than their book counterparts. (Some of which didn't even have descriptions.)

That's where the films failed, imo; I really did want all the dwarves to have plenty to do, and to see them bond more (with each other and Bilbo).

Some of the action scenes were fun, but they typically went on for far too long or went to absurd lengths. IA about the Arkenstone, but I'm hoping that the extended edition of TBOFA will show some of those things. (Even if I doubt it will make a massive difference to the quality of the film, a few additional scenes that tie things together can't hurt. ...Probably. Hopefully. I mostly want more Bilbo grieving.)

Yeah same for me tbh, like I still enjoy the later movies and they've got things I like in them but overall DoS and BoFA are kind of all over the place, the first was sadly the best of the lot(which is a shame because I loved all the characters but eh, something went wrong).

The trailers were real pretty though.

To this day, the Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind trailer is still one of my favorites (https://youtu.be/rb9a00bXf-U). It didn't reveal much about the plot but it wasn't annoyingly ~secretive~ about it, the music choice is excellent, and Jim Carrey yelling at the end was a good juxtaposition to how wacky it seemed.

This trailer for Tron; Legacy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6Afc2uzw4g

This was the trailer that convinced me that yes, I had to see this movie in theaters, preferably in 3-D, and that I needed to own the soundtrack immediately. I believe it's also what officially got me into Daft Punk.

(The movie was a disappointment, but I still love Daft Punk, so it balances out, I guess.)

Also, I still maintain that this trailer for the original Magnificent Seven movie is the most hilariously overblown trailer ever (I can't remember how spoilery it is, though. Just a warning);

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG-ZxrG7htU

(The song! The fact that they form a 7 even though they never do it in the movie! It's amazing.)

Mulan. Can't look for a link right now, but the big dramatic Mulan preview. The movie was great, but I'm still waiting for the movie shown in that preview.
