Favorite children's games

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2015-07-25 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So today , my Dad and my sister and I went out for ice cream. The tables had Connect Four things on them and other board games. Me and My sister had a blast trying all the different ways we could play, from playing to win, playing without caring about winning. actually avoiding winning, and even playing with our eyes closed (our Dad told us who won). It was a blast.

It also reminded me of how when my self and my other sister were kids, we would play beanie baby games, usually playing out plots that were horribly bad-fanficcy and once even having competing Mary Sue characters. We often used all sorts of game pieces (backgammon pieces as plates/dishes). It's why our games kept missing pieces til we grew out of it.

Anyway. What were your favorites board games growing up?

Careers! Hardly anyone my age has ever heard of it- and no wonder, the version we had was literally my Mum's growing up, but I really enjoyed it.

Also: Balderdash!

I've heard of that, I think. It was a fun game.

Yahtzee!

Is it a board game though? Great memories with my grandma nonetheless.

I'd say it still counts. Connect Four doesn't have a board either so...

Oh man we played so much Yahtzee growing up. That game was way more fun than math has any right to be.

Those are fun. I learned how to play War in middle school. also a friend of mine taught me how to play Poker. We used popcorn for chips because she wasn't aloud to gamble for religious reasons. I think. It was fun nonetheless.

Monopoly. Like hard-core, late-night games played for some reason in the stairwell of my friend's apartment building (I guess it didn't get much traffic.) The older kids traded off on who got to be the racecar. I was always the steamship.

Oh man. We used to have a tradition of playing Monopoly on New Years Eve. Eventually we all quit and only my sister liked to. She's the only really competitive one in the family. Most of the rest of us usually lost interest n winning because the games was so long we wanted it to be over.

Eh It can be fun if you don't take it seriously. It's all about "TAKE OVER THE WOOOORLD!!"

My brother and I had so many world domination competitions.

Sorry!

I don't know why, it wasn't really that great a game. I also played Monopoly but never won.

It took me the longest time to get. I never won monopoly much either. But I usually didn't care. I was happy to go bankrupt just to get out of playing. Then again I was noncompetitive in general. Even in T-Ball everyone else would be playing and I just drew pretty pictures in the dirt.

Battleship and Stratego. I had one of those electronic Battleship games with the noises and everything. It was awesome.

Race to the Roof! It was so much fun - it's a scavenger hunt game, but to keep it from being too easy you mix up the rooms every time you play. I always had so much fun setting up each floor. I play it with my nephews sometime and still love it.

Oh, I had a lot of fun coming up with soap opera stories for my barbies. And even though I had a TON of clothes for them (and loved dressing them up!), I spent just as much time taking their clothes off and making them bang each other. (That should've been a clue, tbh.)

As for board games, I was always fond of Monopoly, Clue and Checkers.

Oh man I always came up with ridiculous soap opera melodrama for my barbies, along with my gymnast one being a super-spy who palled around with my Action-Man because she could do high-kicks and shit, her bright pink leotard helped to make her look like some kind of cheesy 70's or 80's spy as well which was nice.

My family are basically board-gaming nerds so I played a lot of odd games as a kid as well as the usual Battleship, Cluedo, and Monopoly variants(Pokémon Monopoly was the favourite though as the dice rules were funky and it came with little Pokémon figures you could use).

Monopoly, Scrabble knock-offs (we had three or four), chess, and cribbage. In no particular order.

My dad has an old 3D version of Connect Four. It's made up of 4 tic-tac-toe style boards (only 4x4) which are stacked one above the other. You can line up your pieces on a single board, or going down the stack, or in various other combinations. It's so cool.

We also used to love playing Guess Who, until we basically figured out the system to end the game in about 4 turns.
