I would say do it silently. Most often you cut people as you don't interact with them that much, and chances are they won't notice (at least not right away).

That being said, some people seem to take these kinds of things way too seriously. Like a friend of mine once got a phone call from a girl from middle school after unfriending her on Facebook, and they hadn't even really been friends back in school.

They'll notice if they have a Paid account, which allows you to sign up for notifications when people de-friend you. Not that this should stop OP, just thought I'd mention it.
