Dead State

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-07-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I'm probably the only person playing this as it's kind of obscure outside of PC gaming circles (especially given that it's rooted in old school cRPG culture) and of course everyone's tired of zombies, but I've been neck-deep in this thing for two weeks and I wanna talk about it.

Ultimately it's sort of an RPG/squad strategy/survival sim hybrid? Or to put it another way, it's XCOM with zombies instead of aliens. You're stuck in a small town school in central Texas and it's your job to keep the place running -- that means maintaining the shelter's defenses, building amenities and facilities, and getting food and supplies and fuel to keep the generator running. Combat is turn-based and you'll face zombies (and lots of) but also plenty of armed living people who want to kill you, steal your stuff, and wear your skin for underwear. You don't gain experience by whacking enemies, but by performing goals like bringing back X pounds of food, Y amount of luxury items, crossing items off your to-do list, etc. You have a big map to explore and plenty of locations to find and loot, lots of survivors to bring back to your shelter, and the occasional crisis situation where you have to make big decisions.

There's a couple flaws, though. First, it's a bit buggy (lasting legacy of the game's long early access period) and the combat sequences can be interminable, especially if there's a lot of enemies (which in turn actually causes the game to momentarily freeze.) Second, the plot is time-based rather than player progression-based -- in other words, you're stuck here for 100 in-game days whether you like it or not. Third, there's a lot of mechanics that simply aren't explained very well to you -- like I had no idea I could switch between on-foot and horseback and car until I looked it up and then I realized they were options on the map. I was wondering why I couldn't take my horses out. And fourth, well... it's all a bit done before, isn't it? It hits all the notes -- big cast of characters, all of them arguing with each other and making alliances, the zombies are less of a threat compared to other human beings, lots of poignant tropes such as the infected spouse, etc. etc. etc. -- I've seen this movie before. We all have.

I like it anyway though. It's a lot better now after the Reanimated megapatch, too, but there's still some things I'd like to see.

MTE

Deaftool's tastes are just so... meh. I don't think he likes anything that isn't some neckbeard thing.

A derogatory nickname mocking a disability that the person literally has is not making you look like any less of a neckbeard.

he's not actually deaf tho

So he's been faking it this whole time? That makes sense. Now I'm wondering if that rumor that he bullied someone into suicide might actually be true.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You're pushing that rumor so hard, anon... have to work it in anywhere you can, am I right?

Man, this is plain sad. You have a problem with someone? Whatever. Stooping to spreading malicious rumors about people esp w/r/t a serious topic like suicide is a low even dethtoll hasn't stooped to.

If you dislike him that much, maybe think about that.

I'm reminded of Jaybie's hater. I wonder if they're the same person.

I wouldn't it put past them. They do the same sort of shit like shitting on someone for their disability and mocking it and yet claiming to have the moral high ground.

I have seen dethtoll be a stubborn asshole all over the place and I can get why it'd infuriate people but there are lows he doesn't hit which these anons do.

For someone who complains so much about computer RPGs you sure do spend a lot of time playing computer RPGs. You're a hypocritical faggot, Deaftool, and your tastes are shit. SHIT.

I was going to actually respond to this, but then I realized I was thinking about Survivalist. I guess there are a lot of zombie games out right now.

Edit: I looked up a little more about this, and it looks like the same kind of game as Survivalist, the kind I don't buy anymore. You have all these choices where being good makes the game harder and being evil makes it easier. So I make the good choice again and again until the game gets stupidly hard, and then I quit the game, because fuck you devs, you're not going to make some point about the corruption of humanity by making evil the only way your game is remotely fun.

It's not really like that. Most of the choices you make are pretty ambiguous -- like for example what to do with the biker gang that wants you to hand over Regina. Depending on which subleaders are at the shelter by that point (Regina, Vic and Todd are guaranteed, assuming none of them died) your choices are to attack the bikers at their base camp, tell the bikers to fuck off, or hand over Regina. Regina (a former biker herself) makes it very clear she does not like the idea of being handed over and that they'd just come back and kill everyone regardless of whether she was handed over or not. By some standards, attacking the bikers is the evil option, but if you just hand over Regina, which is way more evil really, they'll come back and prove her right.

The only time morality ever really comes into play is when dealing with the very scattered groups of neutral survivors -- some party members can't be with you if you decide to steamroll those camps or they'll object and tell on you to Davis.

How does it compare to State of Decay?

They're kind of similar games in different genres, I guess? SoD is more of a realtime, TPS type of game, whereas Dead State is essentially Classic!Fallout or XCOM with a zombie apocalypse theme, so it's a semi-top-down turn-based RPG/squad tactics game in terms of actual gameplay. (Even the health rankings are cribbed from Fallout -- everything from "wounded" to "almost dead." Given that Brian Mitsoda applied for a job at Black Isle Studios on the strength of Fallout 1, that's not really a surprise.)

Both have a shelter maintenance theme at the very least.
