Things in fiction you used to like/tolerate but is now an instant drop

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you liked it when you were an angsty teenager you but now you look back on it as an adult and sigh at your younger self.

Maybe you've just seen too much of it.

What are the things in fiction you used to like/tolerate but can now cause you to instantly drop a book/series/movie/etc.

Mine in the reply.

Male MC's. Particularly those that glory in violence.

I can see "violence loving characters" being bad. But why are male main characters bad in general?

You can choose not to write "manpain" type characters or other annoying things in them. The aspects that are actually bad are the problem.

Depends on how they're portrayed for me

I like male MCs that glory in violence that are portrayed as unstable and villainous and examples of what not to do

That actually makes me super sad for you, and I genuinely don't mean that in a condescending way. That must cut down so drastically on what media you can comfortably consume.

Same anon.

It's not an instant drop but it decreases my tolerance for the film/book. I'm currently experiencing major disinterest in male!main characters and if the story doesn't have something particularly standing-out about it...welp, save my free time and $ for something else.

I tend to avoid MC of either gender that glory in violence. :s

I used to like those "Not like all those other girls" characters who were kick ass warriors and soooo much better than those stupid girly girls.

I still love kick-ass warrior women but if the story starts tearing down other types of women is an instant 'nope' for me.

SA

This was the OP reply, not the "Male character" anon.

Aaaah same, I just cringed a bit remembering how bad I used to be about that.

Same, can't stand tearing down other types of women.

Same. My knee-jerk reaction to this has been getting worse and worse the older I get.

Secret government agencies. No, sorry, not any more. They used to seem cool and mysterious and they got things done. Which is all well and good in fiction when getting things done is generally beneficial and benign, but then...well the last thirty odd years happened. I now sympathize with the beleaguered civil servant trying to reign them in or the guy who the narrative frames as a traitor who wants to blow the whole cover and let people know.

This is the other reason I have a love-hate relationship with Species Imperative, besides how godawful the love interest is. If your organization is threatening to disappear people without trial if they tell the truth about what they saw, they're probably not the good guys.

Yeah.

I mean, I still like stories about secret government agencies, but yeah, definitely the focus has changed.

But also, and separately, I want to say that I fucking love conspiracy thrillers, and I also love stories about beleaguered civil servants trying to reign people in, so basically I agree with your opinions, subscribe to your newsletter, etc

Irish people. No, that is a lie. I never tolerated those.

The main character finds long lost parents or siblings who they thought were dead or never knew existed. The important family member I had who disappeared is never coming back, so why should I be happy when the so-called relatable protagonist's does?

Granted, this is relegated mostly to fanfic (though certainly some books/shows/etc. are guilty of it), but for me it's Magic Healing Dick. I used to looooove the h/c-ness of it, but I guess for lack of a better phrase, I grew out of it, and now it just seems exploitive and kind of off-putting.

The Chosen One. Mentor dies. Luke I Am Your Father, etc.
"Warrior women" who are so much better than those Other Girls (but who don't actually do a lot of stuff in the story or have any kind of personality or character arc to speak of, and are basically the love interest for the MMC.)

Most high fantasy tropes in general, tbh, and I'm thoroughly tired of grimdark, too. At least there's always Terry Pratchett.

I'm also really really sick of a lot of dystopian fiction, because I think the way they portray dystopias are so shallow. I get it, I get it, teachers and bureaucracy and having to do tests is evil, can you please at least have some nuance in there?

I still think the cycle of heroes becoming mentors is closer to the cycle of abused children becoming abusers than to the healthy paternal relationship it's apparently supposed to be a metaphor for.

Magic is everywhere, but the main characters want to keep it secret. I'd throw that up on Wikileaks in a heartbeat.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yessss that's stupid. I'm okay with magic being unknown - I think it's really interesting if magic is just, like, this weird, boring, old forgotten thing in the corner that no one really cares or knows about or believes in because it's weird and dusty and boring and all the people who do it are weirdos - but actively keeping it a secret is played out.

Also, and relatedly, the whole thing where someone finds out about magic or a secret world and WAAAAAAOW THEY'RE FREAKING OUT AND TOTALLY SHOCKED AND WHAT IS GOING ON. Like, it just honestly doesn't ring true to me in most cases.

I like how Rivers of London handle this, while the heroes are certainly (trying to be) discreet really it is just that most people are too wrapped up in their own lives to notice that a wizard just threw a fireball across Oxford Circus. Probably a street performer, they'd say. I also like that the author is kinda, sorta, acknowledging that that their masquerade is unravelling fast too. Technically he has one character on remand awaiting trial for crimes in which magic is going to be a serious part of the charges and evidence, and I'm curious as to how he handles it.

angst for angst's sake. most depressing concepts, or sad endings in general. life's too short to read about fictional characters who are miserable.
