Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Were you ever involved in a fandom and hardcore shipped something only to take a break from that fandom and then come back to find out that you shipped something completely different from before? Why do you think your preferences changed? (if there even was a definable reason)

Re: Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
For the most boring reason, yes.

There was more canon and more characters added than the main trio as the story went on.

When I first got into FFVII, I was HUGELY into Cloud/Sephiroth and Cloud/Zack.

I left and came back after a few years and was ALL OVER Tseng/Rufus. In large part, I just got TIRED of Cloud's emo characterization and I really enjoyed magnificent bastard Rufus with stoic, loyal Tseng at his side.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, this is exactly what happened to me! Tseng/Rufus just hits all of my buttons. I still enjoy a little bit of Cloud/Zack every once in a while tbh, but I can't stand Cloud/Sephiroth anymore.

Cloud isn't emo, he's just very fucked up in the head.

I actually sort of switch between Stucky and BuckyNat now...I dunno, saturation? And I read more of the comics? But it's not like I ever drop the one, it's more like some days my preferences gravitate more to one side.

Re: Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just can't with Bucky/Nat in the movies. I'd probably be all over it in the comics. But for me the friendship and history with Steve/Bucky trumps any other ship with those two, though weirdly I have no problem shipping Steve/Thor. But I just can't do Bucky/Nat.

When I was first in the Harry Potter fandom, I was super into Draco/Harry because everyone else was into it. Eventually, I left the fandom for a couple of years (not for any real reason; I just got drawn to other fandoms) and when I came back, I realized that Draco/Harry just didn't really do it for me anymore. Now, I prefer Cedric/Harry and Fleur/Harry. Why, you might ask, would I go from shipping the fandom juggernaut to shipping pairings that, by comparison, have very little fic? I have no idea, honestly.

Re: Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of yes. I wasn't hard core but I had a ship I definitely preferred and looked for fic for, and after I took a break from fandom, I'm really not as interested in them as before. I am a multi-shipper so I've always had lots of pairings but the main ship was definitely subsumed by other ships and it's not ever going to come back.

My reason: mostly maturity. The ship appealed to me as a teen since it had a lot of that evil!parent and over-the-top angst that I just can't get into any more.

Yes, but it was more of a side effect. Back in the day I was all about Aragorn in LOTR fic. So I shipped him with everyone. A couple years back when I rewatched the movies I was ALL about Faramir. So...my pairings changed.

Re: Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Faramir is indeed awesome. Are you just into movie!Faramir?

I still ship Aragorn with everyone (at least movie-verse) even though I'm all about the elves right now and not as into Aragorn anymore. But Viggo has so much chemistry with everyone that I still can't stop shipping him with everyone.

For SGA, I shipped John/Rodney initially (not very original, I know) but when I came back to the fandom recently, I found myself shipping Ronan/Rodney and John/Todd (yes, Todd the Wraith...don't judge me). idk what happened.

does any fic exist for Todd? Because I fucking loved him and I too shipped him with John. I also ship Rodney/Ronon but there is like no fic for that either. Sigh. I will read anything with Ronon.

I have never taken a break and come back to find I ship something else, but my SO influences every ship I have, so even if I come away from something shipping a particular pairing, she'll usually manage to drag me over to what she ships instead.

I guess my slash/femslash googles aren't on very tight to begin with.

I've never switched ships, I've just...added ships. I went from being an OTP kind of gal to a multishipper (e.g. going from exclusively shipping Max/Logan from Dark Angel to also shipping Max/Original Cindy).

I was in Teen Wolf fandom and shipped Sterek hardcore, fic, art, the whole shebang. Went away for a bit, came back, and started shipping Sciles. My preferences changing was probably because I started appreciating Scott more as a character and because holy shit, why are so many Sterek shippers so damn obnoxious? I don't have time for character bashing and that seemed to be happening in spades.

The same thing happened with Zutara. I ended up loving Aang/Katara.

Re: Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Samesies for Teen Wolf. I was craaaazy into Sterek during the first season and didn't really care for Scott much. During season two, I began to warm up to Scott and during season three he became one of my favorite characters and at that point, the Sterek fandom had annoyed me so much that I honestly didn't even care to ship it anymore (I normally don't let a few bad eggs in fandom affect what I ship but good lord). Plus, season three had so many Sciles moments (especially 3B. Sooooo many moments) that I couldn't help myself.

Yes. Hardcore shipped House/Cuddy on House the first time around. Gave up on the show before it became officially canon, but by that point the characters were unrecognizable and even the hints of the ship had ruined the characters. Recently rewatched the show and found myself shipping House/Wilson instead.

I shipped Spike/Buffy hardcore as a teenager because I thought Spike was hot. Now I like Angel/Buffy

I tend to move through all major pairings at some point or another before returning to my otp. No major reasons, I just like exploring other characters some times.

Re: Switching Ships

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
My breaks are long. Like... decades-long. When I first read The Silmarillion around the time the LOTR films were being released, what fandom there was seemed to agree that as far as slash pairings went, Fingon/Maedhros had the most subtext (and therefore, the most fic). I didn't see it. Fast forward to 2012 and the fandom was having a kind of renaissance, and by then I saw it. Big time.

And then there was the time I played the FFIV remake after not having touched the original game since I was a kid, and discovering that not only did I no longer hate Kain for being a third wheel for Cecil/Rosa but that Golbez/Kain was now also going to be a thing for me.

Idk if this really counts, because one character dies and another is introduced in the interim, but I left RE shipping Wesker/Chris and returned shipping Piers/Chris.
