Circumcision is fucked up.

Honestly I'm sad that that is considered controversial.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There are health reasons to get circumcised though (like my uncle who was circumcised due to phimosis).

Sure, but let's be honest, that's not what most people talk about when they say they're against circumcision.

There are pretty much valid medical reasons for everything...like if you have gangrene doctors might save you life by removing the limb - but that's not a "normal" situation.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most people get that when you say you are against "unnecessary medical procedure" that health reasons for it are excluded. Sort of like, I am against cutting into people's eyeballs. Except for health reasons.

True, but that's different from circumcising a child who has no health issues and no say in the matter.

I don't have a problem with circumcision as a whole, but I do have a problem with circumcision that's done without consent (and, really, any unnecessary body modification that happens without the person's consent).

I was referring only to non-medical reasons circumcision, sorry, I should have been more clear.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It never bothered me, and I doubt it ever will. And it's difficult for me to come to a position that it's fundamentally wrong in general, given that specific experience.

I totally get it. I grew up in a country where it's incredibly rare so I know that has 100% influenced my opinion.
But I just can't understand how anyone can look at a newborn baby and think 'What a beautiful baby let's put it through non-essential surgery for no reason except a religion they may not even grow to believe in'
I feel the same way about FGM.

Fuck, I think it's pretty weird to pierce a child's ears before they can speak too. Just... it's a baby. Let them be.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And see this I have a problem with. I'm 100% against male circumcision, but comparing it to FGM pisses me off. It is not remotely close to being the same thing at all.

Non-essential surgery that kills over 100 babies a year in the US. >:

From what I understood it's mandatory in Islam and Judaism but what the ever loving fuck made American people collectively decide it's for the best if their boy gets circumcised?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Anti-masturbation

Not even joking. I think it was Kellog (cereal guy) who pushed it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I've always wondered why it's so prevalent here, but never bothered to try to find out. Didn't work, obviously.

(Guess they left that bit out of the Drunk History episode on the Kellog brothers!)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
This is true. And the American public ate it up (and the cereal).

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
You sure it wasn't the cereal guy's brother? He was the "health" nut with weird ideas.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Just looked up the stats, wow, seems like the majority of baby boys still get their foreskins removed there. (In my country the rate has plummeted in recent times to somewhere from a fifth to quarter.)

Am in possession of two boys with possession of their foreskins, no one has ever raised it as a question or issue. Imagining cutting them off just cos... crikey.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You know what's really funny about this whole thread? I don't think any of you have ever asked a grown circumcised man how he feels about it. I have. It's currently my job. I've met exactly two guys who were genuinely (and by that I mean psychologically) traumatized it, and that's because the operation was improperly performed and required correction at a later date (they could remember it, in other words). EXACTLY TWO, after nearly 1,000 interviews. But I've interviewed a shitload of men who openly say that they hate Jews (google: anti-circumcision police), and several other men who've *decided* that they're angry about the fact that when they were babies some tiny, potentially useful/helpful/prophylactic operation was performed on Little Johnny.

See, deciding you're pissed off, and being traumatized are 2 completely different things. And here's the truth about circumcision: uncircumcised men are more prone to STDs and transmission of STDs. When they're in trouble and need to get circumcised, you try telling that to a grown uncircumcised man. Trauma? They practically traumatize themselves before they get the pre-med.

I see grown men cry every single day. And generally, they all NEED to see a therapist about it, but you take a guess how few can afford that.

So if anyone even reads this, THINK ABOUT THAT.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Wow we can actually be pissed off about more than one thing without mentioning the other things!

Nope, sorry not putting my two boys under the knife even under anaesthetic. Call me selfish or something. I still think it's an unnecessary medical procedure, with risks, and fathers don't need to do it to their sons to 'be like them'. Even if the majority of men in American society don't consider themselves the walking wounded. Cool?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
AYART

I wouldn't ever suggest you do so, and I wouldn't call you selfish. I will say that that if one parent decides to have their child circumcised for valid reasons (and they are valid. Urologists aren't making up the facts, seriously), then other parents shouldn't attempt to talk them out of it.

Circumcision for cultural reasons is another kettle of fish, but in Western societies the cultural practitioners are *mostly* medically trained (there are exceptions. Saying more than that will involve a wall of text and I've got a deadline for something else).

Mostly agree, but is there something else beyond just crying that mandates therapy?

I made this post: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1255385.html?thread=852345049#cmt852345049

I thought it was obvious from the context, but I am a circumcised male.

(but I actually am completely untraumatised by it, so I can't disagree with that aspect of it)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
You are terrible at your job lol

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Intact men are NOT more likely to get STDs than circumcised guys. That's a scare tactic.
