We all know the saying about how extremist people make everything right or wrong, good or evil, with us or against us.

What are your extreme opinions? What's something you can only* be black and white about?

*only as in people either agree with you or are your enemy and cut out of your life, not as in you have strong feelings about an insensitive joke they once made or some dumb thing they did but they're overall okay

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Before 12 weeks of gestation, abortion on demand is 100% FINE.

Whenever I see someone argue against it, I think "Yep, there's an idiot."

People who want to ban abortions before 12 weeks are my enemy, no ifs ands or buts.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you mean 20 weeks.

I think it would have to be pretty hugely awful to cut them out of my life.

I pretty much always see things from two (or more) perspectives.

But, to say an inevitably controversial thing: abortion.

While I absolutely DO see the argument from the other side, personally the bodily integrity of a woman will always be more important.

And while I can be friends with people with different opinions on it - I do think that if I ever got pregnant, wanted an abortion, and a friend/relative would try to stop me or shame me, I WOULD consider cutting them out of my life.

Another thing probably is people who hold rather gross opinions about people with mental problems (and in some cases disabilities) - like along the lines "we should lock them up and throw away the key" or "they're a burden to society and therefore worthless".

Also people who are pretty much clearly racist of homophobic. There's a certain level I can take, because i do believe most of us have some prejudices (like a less tasteful joke here or there). But if you'd say something like that asylum seekers deserve to drown or that gay people deserve to be punched in the face...

Yeah, we'll probably not be friends.

The last two opinions are my dad.

Can't wait to hear how he reacts when I tell him I'm gay! (lol jk I'm probably never going to be out at this rate)

Would you support an abortion for a mentally disabled person who couldn't care for the child and isn't really capable of consenting?

(As opposed to someone who would struggle but clearly wants the child.)

You know what's really funny about this whole thread? I don't think any of you have ever asked a grown circumcised man how he feels about it. I have. It's currently my job. I've met exactly two guys who were genuinely (and by that I mean psychologically) traumatized it, and that's because the operation was improperly performed and required correction at a later date (they could remember it, in other words). EXACTLY TWO, after nearly 1,000 interviews. But I've interviewed a shitload of men who openly say that they hate Jews (google: anti-circumcision police), and several other men who've *decided* that they're angry about the fact that when they were babies some tiny, potentially useful/helpful/prophylactic operation was performed on Little Johnny.

See, deciding you're pissed off, and being traumatized are 2 completely different things. And here's the truth about circumcision: uncircumcised men are more prone to STDs and transmission of STDs. When they're in trouble and need to get circumcised, you try telling that to a grown uncircumcised man. Trauma? They practically traumatize themselves before they get the pre-med.

I see grown men cry every single day. And generally, they all NEED to see a therapist about it, but you take a guess how few can afford that.

So if anyone even reads this, THINK ABOUT THAT.

Hard to say. My strongest moral principle would probably be that it's wrong for an adult to use physical force to cause pain to a small child. But my mother thinks spanking is okay, and while I lost a lot of respect for her, I haven't cut her out of my life.

If you're autistic and you can manage to live independently (at some point even if not right this minute) take care of your needs etc, than you have the RIGHT to decide whether you'd want to be cured or not. That's just a fact. It's a huge change to you, and you have the RIGHT to say "I want this" or "I don't want this".

If you don't want it. You have every right to refuse. You are not being selfish in any way. Anybody who tells you that you are selfish for making a choice against it is a shit bag (and probably pretty damn entitled to if they think that you owe it to them to fundamentally change your brain). You are not taking it away from people who need it by choosing not to have it yourself.

Come at me, bro.

To some degree, other economic issues: People who don't understand economics that well are probably surprised by how angry I can get over pro-cyclical tax policies or favoring elite capital.

I will cut people out of my life if they actively want to harm people on the basis of race, gender, or sexuality. It doesn't need to just be physical harm either, it can be the removal of rights or legal autonomy.

Don't explain to me why bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a "necessary evil." Don't do it with 9/11 either.

Actually the douchebag who justified 9/11 to me wasn't even kind enough to call it any type of evil. He was straight up about "we brought it on ourselves, we deserved it."

I have a lot of VERY strong opinions, but as far as opinions that would make me refuse friendship with someone, let alone consider them an absolute enemy... idk. I like to think people are more than just a few opinions, no matter how misguided or even harmful I think the are.

I guess where I would draw the line is if they had some kind of viewpoint that was actively harming others. Like, they felt it was okay to hit their kids. Picket the funerals of gay people. Abuse animals. That sort of thing.

Some opinions I think are harmful - like anti-gay marriage, but I could stand a friendly relationship with that person, and since I'm gay, I'd hope maybe I could cause them to open their minds a bit. I wouldn't declare them an outright enemy.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-28 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)

I'd like to say that I'm live and let live (barring major crimes like sexual assault) but I just can't deal with people who feel the need to "correct" our self-definition that we've expressed since I came out 25 years ago. (see also).
