[CATS!]

Pets can usually sense when they're being loved. I'm sure your singing made things better for him somehow.

And I hope your grandparents got rid of their dog.

Why should they have gotten rid of their dog?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
because it killed a kitten?

Okay? Cats kill smaller animals all the time. Dogs can kill things if they're not properly secured. Hopefully the grandparents started keeping up with their dog better.

Idk, I'm the biggest animal lover around, and I'd still be pretty weary of keeping a dog that (purposely) killed a kitten.

Well, we don't actually know what happened, just that the dog hurt the kitten. But I've had plenty of cat-aggressive dogs who were fine with people.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are some mighty conclusions you're jumping to. It's entirely likely it was an accident, due to dogs generally being much larger/stronger than cats and not always being aware of their own size/strength.

Oh FFS. Dogs don't go "I'm going to kill that kitten!!!". They sense a thing and act. It's on their handlers to prevent danger. Blame here is on the grandparents, not the dog.

da

It really sounds like they are unable to control a dog that is, like it or not, somewhat aggressive. Accidents happen, and we don't know OP's exact situation, but animals hurt one another when they are improperly introduced and not controlled. Big animals like dogs can kill a kitten in two seconds flat. Too many pet owners think it'll be fine if the animals play and "sort it out" themselves, and one ends up dead. It's sad, and it's borderline animal cruelty to voluntarily put two animals together in a dangerous scenario.

Not trying to blame OP, again, don't know what happened, and this stuff can happen quick - dog suddenly gets free of a lead, goes straight after the kitten, etc. But I've heard too many bad pet owner stories of owners thinking it'll be cute to plot their little kitten in front of their big dog's nose, and bam, you've killed your kitten.

I'm not saying the grandparents need to get rid of the dog either, but they should if they don't know how to properly control it. And they should never let that dog be around other animals, knowing that it can get aggressive.

Yeah. I work at a vet hospital and it sucks how much this happens, although usually it's two dogs rather than a dog and cat.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
...Because it is dangerous toward pets? What kind of question is that?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-08-01 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
My dogs are also dangerous towards pets if they're not properly controlled. One of them tried to kill a neighbor's little dog while I was holding his leash. Mind you, I had WARNED the neighbor verbally not to come near us with her dog, saying our dog was NOT small dog safe - she did it anyway saying "oh it's fine, they know each other!!" (because they like to bark across the fence at each other). My much larger dog had his jaws around the small dog's neck in a very short period of time. Fortunately we quickly separated them without injury to the little dog - and she went to walk on the other side of the street.

It's not always the dog's fault. People are responsible for controlling their pets. And they are responsible for heeding warnings given about other peoples' animals.

Believe it or not, lots of dogs and cats are dangerous towards other animals, including other pets. It's not actually that unusual. Pet ownership requires taking responsibility for it.

A pretty reasonable one.

Sorry no one likes your aggressive dog.

No one else needs to because I know how to control and maintain her. Thanks for your concern though.

All dogs are potentially dangerous to smaller animals. The larger the dog, the higher the risk.

Doesn't necessarily mean the dog is aggressive or out for blood, just that they should be supervised with smaller "prey*" animals and strange animals should always be introduced slowly. Sounds like poor OP's cat was not introduced properly and as a result, this. That's all on the grandfolks for not being responsible with their dog.

*Cats fall into that category

That's kind of an odd story, but sweet.

Oh, this secret is both sad and sweet. When I was a kid I had a kitten that was just in really poor health and when its time came, I sang to it as it passed.

Wow your grandparents are fucking scum, bringing their dangerous mutt in a place with a cat.

I'm so sorry, anon.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-08-01 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a long time since I've hears someone use "mutt" in a derogatory way.

I agree though, highly irresponsible of them. Not in any way the dog's fault, and many dogs aren't cat safe - doesn't mean they're horrible dogs - but very irresponsible of the grandparents to bring a dog that was not confirmed to be cat safe to meet someone else's cat.
