(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)It really sounds like they are unable to control a dog that is, like it or not, somewhat aggressive. Accidents happen, and we don't know OP's exact situation, but animals hurt one another when they are improperly introduced and not controlled. Big animals like dogs can kill a kitten in two seconds flat. Too many pet owners think it'll be fine if the animals play and "sort it out" themselves, and one ends up dead. It's sad, and it's borderline animal cruelty to voluntarily put two animals together in a dangerous scenario.
Not trying to blame OP, again, don't know what happened, and this stuff can happen quick - dog suddenly gets free of a lead, goes straight after the kitten, etc. But I've heard too many bad pet owner stories of owners thinking it'll be cute to plot their little kitten in front of their big dog's nose, and bam, you've killed your kitten.
I'm not saying the grandparents need to get rid of the dog either, but they should if they don't know how to properly control it. And they should never let that dog be around other animals, knowing that it can get aggressive.

It's not always the dog's fault. People are responsible for controlling their pets. And they are responsible for heeding warnings given about other peoples' animals.
Believe it or not, lots of dogs and cats are dangerous towards other animals, including other pets. It's not actually that unusual. Pet ownership requires taking responsibility for it.

Doesn't necessarily mean the dog is aggressive or out for blood, just that they should be supervised with smaller "prey*" animals and strange animals should always be introduced slowly. Sounds like poor OP's cat was not introduced properly and as a result, this. That's all on the grandfolks for not being responsible with their dog.
*Cats fall into that category

I agree though, highly irresponsible of them. Not in any way the dog's fault, and many dogs aren't cat safe - doesn't mean they're horrible dogs - but very irresponsible of the grandparents to bring a dog that was not confirmed to be cat safe to meet someone else's cat.
