What do you call your parents?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-31 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you call your parents mom/dad/something else or do you use their names when you are talking to them or about them?

I use mom and dad and addressing them by their first names would still feel strange, even though I've been an adult for a very long time.

Yeah, I say "Mom" and "Dad".

I call my mother "mother". And I call my father "I miss you daddy, why did you have to die and leave me", there may be some other stuff but by that point it is usually obscured by the sobbing. I miss my dad.

Uh, VERY few people call their parents by their first name, even when they're an adult. Calling your parents by your first name isn't an "adult" thing, it's an "a few random people here and there do it" thing.

99% of people call their parents mom/dad/etc until the day they die.

Mam and Dad. It would never occur to me to call them by their first names, though since my mam was my teacher for a few years, I have called by her surname and 'Miss' before.

...um, do you live in a country where this is a thing?

Because, uh, you DO realize that in most places, almost no "adults" call their parents by their first name, no matter how old they are? It's like, not a thing. Some families (mostly hippie/new age-y sorts, or adoptive families) do it, but it's not a practice that occurs with any regularity, at any age.

I'm also an adult and I call my parents Mom and Dad. I've known very few people of any age who use their parents' first names.

For some reason, up until middle school or so, if I was talking to one parent about the other I'd always use Mommy (if I was talking to dad about mom) and Daddy (talking to mom about dad) even though I hadn't used those names to their faces for a long time. I think it was because I was still using those names when they got divorced, so they never heard me call the other one Mom or Dad and I figured they would think it was weird? I was weird.

I called my parents by their names when I was in junior/high school. Now, I cycle through names. I call my dad by his full name, his preferred nickname, some pet names I have for him, and Dad or Daddy.

My mom is Mom or Mother or I have pet names for her too. (And they have pet names for me.) I guess I call my dad by his given name much more than my mom. But, if I need to get their attention, I definitely call them by name.

I call my mom "Mom", my dad "Dad", my step-dad "Dad" and my step-mom "Mom".

Lol. I'm a two-timing bitch, or something.

Mom/Dad or Mommy/Daddy depending on the situation.

Even when I worked with my mom I still called her mom. I couldn't call her by her name even though she was technically a co-worker/on equal footing with me. It felt too weird.

Literally the only person I've ever known who calls their parents by their first name is Eustace Scrubb from Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

I would never ever use my parents' first name except to identify them in the third person (eg: "Hi, I'm _____'s daughter.")

I call them Mama and Dad/Daddy, though when I'm talking about them, I refer to them as "my mom/mother" or "my dad."

I always refer to my father as "dad" in conversations but call him "daddy" when I'm talking to him. "Daddy" feels so immature and also makes sound like a ~daddy's girl~ and the reality could not be further from the truth, but I hate those assumptions.

Mummy and Daddy *cringe* They absolutely INSISTED we not call them Mum and Dad when we got a bit older, so now us siblings refer to them as M and D, sometimes my mum signs off with that too.

For my kids, we're Mama and Mummy but it will be Mama and Mum when they're older. Or possibly our first names, whatever our kids prefer, that works well for our friends, doesn't sound weird to me.

Mom and Dad, sometimes Mother and Father when I'm being facetious.

The only people I knew who had their kids call them by name were hippies, and this was in the late 70s/early 80s, so.

When I was <5yrs I used Mama and Papa, <10yrs Mommy and Daddy, <20yrs Mom and Dad.

Now there's just my mom and I'll call her mom, mum, maaaaaahm (in an artificially whiny way when she isn't listening to me), and The Parental Unit.

I just call them mum and dad, calling them by their names would be odd to say the least.

I call my mother either 'Mom' or 'Ma' and if I'm talking about her, it's my mother. As you can see. I don't call the man who abandoned us anything.

I use Mom and Dad. I will sometimes say their first names just to get their attention if we're in a crowded place and they're not filtering for "Mom" or "Dad" because twenty thousand other people are saying it xD; but it would feel very, very weird to use them in conversation with them.
