Because she still accomplishes everything she wants to accomplish, despite everyone else telling her she can't and putting her down because of the sexist way they perceive her? And basically stomps on everyone who ever gave her shit.

So? Can feminists not be sexy?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
NO. Feminists must be hairy-legged, abrasive, obnoxious, and ugly. Otherwise they're a traitor to the sisterhood and must be shunned because how dare they pander to men.

This triggers the third wave. If a proud womyn is doing it she's choosing her choice and any critique is therefore literally fascism and probably by the patriarchy to.

It's not feminist because she gets in by appealing sexually to the board. It's feminist because of what she does the rest of the time.

Also not everything has to be all-or-nothing in order to be feminist. This just in: nothing's perfect. It's still a great movie, and Elle's great.

It seems to me they were almost trying to find reasons to invite her, because the 'sexy babe in a pool' thing was a bit offputting to them. They were all 'she's in a bikini, in a hot tub...what?'

And then they started bringing up her high test scores and etc., like 'yes, she seems like a bit of a bimbo, but look at these scores!'

So. *shrug* My interpretation.

I thought the movie was calling out the sexism that exists in the system. It's a room full of old white men drooling over a young woman, it doesn't have any bearing on her. Feminists are allowed to be sexy too. In the movie VG also gives her special treatment because he wants to boink her, something a lot of women have to put up with in their work environment, but that doesn't mean she didn't work hard to get where she was.

That being said I liked this movie a lot less than Miss Congeniality.

I like how Elle is a layered character. Isn't that what the whole movie's about, that you don't have to act or look a certain way to still be a feminist?

So what if she was in a bikini? That scene was more about the board's reaction than her behaviour, which was in character for her. She was trying for 'healthy, energetic and fun-loving' which she sees as positive qualities, on top of her scores which speak for themseves, rather than anything overtly manipulative. Her only fault is that she's a little naive, which comes up again later in the movie.
