Yes, but I doubt James would have continued on like that.

A lot of people like to shit on him and Sirius for it, but it's CANON in OotP that Sirius realizes it was a stupid thing to do:

[[Lupin looked sideways at Sirius, then said, 'Look, Harry, what you've got to understand is that your father and Sirius were the best in the school at whatever they did — everyone thought they were theheight of cool — if they sometimes got a bit carried away — '

'If we were sometimes arrogant little berks, you mean,' said Sirius.]]

And then later...

[['Of course he was a bit of an idiot!' said Sirius bracingly, 'we were all idiots! Well — not Moony so much,' he said fairly, looking at Lupin.

But Lupin shook his head. 'Did I ever tell you to lay off Snape?' he said. 'Did I ever have the guts to tell you I thought you were out of order?']]

It's pretty obvious Sirius and Remus had the maturity to concede that they hadn't been the best of people as teenagers, and if James had grown up similarly he too would have probably admitted to it.

What, seriously? You're quoting CANON EVIDENCE to back up your opinions rather than generic speculation and lottery-ball-combo comparisons? That's so feeble and tenuous. You're really reaching here, dude.

Shhhhhhh. Anon used logic. It'll be super-ineffective!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-01 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that's a Good argument.

Well since they're not /really/ self-flagellating and the word 'abusive' isn't used, it doesn't count!

Good use of canon, though. It's so nice when people bring actual canon to these discussions.

Thanks for minimizing 'abusive'.

Yes, and given that Sirius has been in prison for the last 13 years and hasn't had the chance to mature much past a 21 year old it's likely James would have been a lot *more* mature about it than Sirius.

I think showing James to be a human being who acted in a bad way was a really brave choice actually. Sometimes people who turn out to be nice and good can have moments where they act like assholes, especially if they have an easy life where they're popular and there's an easy target like Snape. It's not nice to admit it, and it doesn't excuse the behaviour but not all bullies grow up to be horrible people. It's one of the annoying things about life.

Yup. This exactly.

Too bad a lot of the kinds of people who do not mature past their teen years (and cannot grasp the concept of other people maturing past their teen years) are the type of people who gravitate towards fandom (because it's the only place that accepts people like them -- other social circles tend to not like immature people like that) and therefore these kinds of people are overrepresented in fandom and have a large voice.

Except Pottermore showed James to be just as much of an asshole toward Lily's family for no real reason other than he found it funny.

Lupin and Sirius were not James Potter.

Gosh, *slaps cheeks* It couldn't have been possibly because Vernon was a thin-skinned, narrow-minded status-seeking kind of person at all.

He wasn't being an asshole to Petunia and Vernon because he thought it was funny. He thought Vernon being an asshole toward him was funny, and Vernon got offended by that.

Suuuuuuuuure. From the guy who MADE HIS ADOPTED SON SLEEP IN A CUPBOARD UNDER THE STAIRS.

Dude, Vernon's perspective on the Potters was covered in the first chapter of the first book.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Asshole? Because he teased VERNON? How fucking thin is your skin, you think how he spoke to Vernon makes him an asshole? Seriously?
