This is the post that inspired the thread. Mike Huchabee's latest gaffe... if you can call it a gaffe when he's clearly serious... is that he will use military force to stop women from getting abortions.

Crazy bastard.

The interesting thing about this (outside its obvious insanity) is that I don't think it was a gaffe. I think it's Huckabee, as the sort of politician who is attuned to his political environment and minute changes in it in the same sort of way that a springbok is attuned to the veldt, responding to the changes that the Trump has wrought.

This is going to be the craziest goddamn primary season since at least the 70s.

I can't ever remember a primary season this crazy. At least the Democratic side seems sane at the moment.

(I guess I should know better by now, because the candidates this year are just...unbelievable. In the worst way possible. This isn't the first time Huckabee has said something batshit either, but still, that's...wow.)

Like, it's not misinterpreted or anything. He actually said that he would use the military to stop abortions regardless of what the Supreme Court said. It's in basic contravention of every aspect of the American constitution and American democracy.

What was REALLY telling was that when he was told that doing so would be a major breach of the Supreme Court, he started citing cases of other presidents violating Supreme Court rulings. It was like, "well the OTHER kids were doing it, too! so there!"

Though using military force against American citizens on American soil certainly doesn't have the precedent that Huckabee thinks it does.

That's their argument for everything: yeah but everybody else is doing it so why do I have to apologize/be reasonàble/stop taking crazy pills!?!?!?!??

The only good thing about these kind of comments is that the sheer stupidity will stop (most) people from voting for them, so that's a plus.

Honestly, I don't think so. Republicans will vote Republican, just as Democrats will vote Democrat. You just sway those people who veer around moderate.

And frankly, I don't think the vast majority of pro-life people would be concerned about Huckabee's remarks. It's a very black or white issue to them. On the pro-choice side you get some people who will try to qualify when they think abortion is acceptable (rape, incest, mother's life in danger) and when it isn't (as a birth control) and you have a range of opinions. Pro-life people, the vast, vast majority, will view any abortion as the murder of a baby, and therefore any means necessary is perfectly ethical to protect that baby. I don't really see this turning off anyone who was already pro-choice.

I certainly think you have a point (in that most pro-life people think abortion is unacceptable in basically any circumstance and almost anything that stops it is okay), but I'm also not sure I believe that not one of them would see that comment and go, "Okay, that's a bit drastic."

Granted, maybe not many...but I feel like it would at least make some people stop and think.

(Then again, I could be wrong. But I'd like to not be wrong about this, lol.)

Yes he does, because he believes himself to be right. This is the inherent danger of allowing crazies like him any sort of power: they are batshit fucks who think their god is on their side.

I'd bet you a thousand bucks he doesn't believe this. He believes something like it, sure, I'm not saying he's a total liar, but he's a highly adapted political creature.

See for reference the way that his attitude towards health and weight loss changed after Michelle Obama started talking about the issue.

Nah, he believes it with all his heart. I grew 7p with dyed in the wool religious reactionaries like him, they believe what they believe because God says so.

And to be clear I'm not saying he doesn't believe in God and he's just a huckster. But the specific positioning of this policy and the specific policy measures, I don't think it's especially sincere.

I'm of the opinion that most high ranking Republicans don't actually believe half the shit they say. I believe they are certainly economically interested in protecting big companies and the rich, but the knee jerk reaction social issues, like abortion, religion, gay marriage, etc - issues that are easy for anyone to have an opinion about - those are just so they can appeal to people who aren't rolling in money. The religious lower class. It's pretty obvious that these Republicans don't actually give two shits about what Jesus or whoever had to say.

Ted Cruz is the scariest of them all though, every single thing he does and says comes off as extremely calculated in a sociopathic manner and as if he is consciously manipulating everyone around him– it's honestly so frightening to listen to him

I think most of them believe some or most of it, but very few of them believe all of it.

For instance, I'm damn sure Lindsey Graham believes in the foreign policy aspect of the ideology, and he's probably pretty comfortable with capitalism at a basic level. But on the social stuff, I find it really hard to believe he's particularly committed to that. I think that someone like Ted Cruz is both a true believer and a very, very manipulative intelligent person. There's not necessarily any reason you can't be both.

Fun fact I just discovered: the Democratic Party does not consider Mike Huckabee a serious enough candidate to devote resources to analyzing and rebutting his statements.
