Braver than me anon - when I get "in the scared mood" after watching a movie or plating a game or sufficiently alarming creepypasta I have to turn all lights on D:

Glad it's helping you out!

I'm thirty years old and I still suffer from a fear of the dark. I don't know if it's intense enough to be called a phobia, but it's pretty irritating to have.

So hey I applaud you. Even if it may seem like a silly way to go about getting over it, if it works and doesn't hurt anyone, it's not silly at all. :)

I only seem to be scared of the dark when I'm trying to sleep because I can walk around at night with the lights off quite happily but as soon as get in bed to go to sleep I need a nightlight on.

That'd actually make me MORE scared for the same reason, haha. I wouldn't want to be in a horror game!

OP here

I thought this would be the case for me as well, but the first time I tried it, I was so excited. It was like, look at the dynamic lighting! Look at the amazing rendering! Look at how I can move my flashlight from side to side and view the floor and ceilings! This game is so well made!

Normally when I'm walking around in the dark I feel like I'm in a horror game already or feel scared of things that might happen, but making it even more like a game lets me step out of it and see things as a player rather than as a protagonist.

At least I think that's what's happening anyway.

I sometimes do this too... though I'm not generally scared by anything for the most part.

Fear of darkness is a pretty common fear, and not one I feel is anything that odd or shameful. I have a bit of it too, but it was worse when I was younger. I still sleep with a lamp on because sleeping in total darkness doesn't work for me; it makes me anxious and I can't fall asleep. I don't mind walking around with lights off unless it's nighttime, but honestly that's more about me not wanting to accidentally trip and break my neck than fear of something hiding in the darkness. (Though frankly, I've had moments where I worried about those things. Fears are often irrational. *shrugs*)

I want to try this just so I can save on my electricity bill.

I still get afraid of the dark if I've been reading scary stories or watching something scary (doesn't help that I currently live by myself). One night I was in bed and there was a loud clatter from my kitchen that almost made me pee myself. Turns out my mop had fallen over.

Good on you for getting over your fear, OP!

That's a great way to cope and also cute as hell.
