Comic Fans

What kind of comic art do you like? Or what do you dislike? Favorite artist? Are there layouts that bug you? Or impress you?

Basically, what are your thoughts on the more technical side of comics (not the stories/characters)?

Re: Comic Fans

I've been enjoying the big two's art since the early naughts.

I don't like the photorealistic look some of the big projects go for, or the murky colors. I like my comics to look like comics. Limited color palette, fairly flat looking backgrounds. Keep it bright, bold, and clear.

Loving the Transformers:More Than Meets the Eye though. Especially their latest side trip to "earth". Human Megatron is hot, although human Cyclonus is...unsettling hot too.

Hot Cyclonus is hot. No arguments.

I generally like stuff that is more stylized and cartoony over the traditional superhero comic look. There are a few artists who are really good at kind of merging the two, I constantly forget their names though (I've been bad with keeping up with comics in the past few years.)

I dislike a lot of super muscled/bad anatomy super hero art. I think if you're not SPECTACULAR at life drawing and have a super grasp of anatomy it's not a style you should draw in. But a lot of people who grew up reading super hero comics think that's the way they MUST be drawn and I don't agree.

Back to the positive - one fav I can think of is Skottie Young. His drawings are always so full of energy.

Oddly, my two all-time favourite comic artists couldn't be more different from each other; Will Eisner and Kaori Yuki. The former is the definitive American comic book artist and the latter is the best shojo manga artist I've ever come across.

I'm also a big fan of Amanda Conner. I especially love the way she draws Power Girl; she makes her look both beautiful and badass and doesn't do ridiculous things to her anatomy! (Everyone else take note, THIS is how you draw a woman with large breasts. http://i.newsarama.com/images/i/000/064/880/original/PowerGirl01.jpg?1364094722)

As for art I dislike... Marvel and DC's house styles from the late 1990s up to the end of the 20th century are ugly, boring, and off-putting to me. That Jim Lee pseudo-realistic crap. Yuck. If I wanted realistic art I'd read a fucking Alex Ross comic (and I don't even like Alex Ross's style that much, though I thought it worked pretty well in Kingdom Come).

Also, I will never get over how hideous Kelley Jones's art is. Just fucking LOOK at this:

HOW DOES THIS GUY HAVE A JOB AS A PROFESSIONAL IN THE INDUSTRY?!?!

Amanda Conner PG is the best. Was it her that also did the recent PG/HQ crossover? That was pretty good too.

AYRT

If google is to be believed, she did indeed do the PG/HQ crossover! Thanks for reminding me I still need to read that, btw.

I can't fucking stand Kelly Jones' art. It's like Rob Liefeld on salvia.

I don't care for this kind of art:

Re: Comic Fans

Really? I am the total opposite. I like my comics to look like art. A lot of the non-obvious art type comics still looks like it was made in the 1980s too for some reason.

Re: Comic Fans

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it more realistic or art with clean lines. I've never really been able to get into the artsy looks for comics. It throws off my ability to get immersed into the story.

Re: Comic Fans

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so totally different then. I know going in that it is a story so the closer it hews to "real" the more it throws me when the small things don't gel. The more artistic it looks, the less it bothers me when the writer and artist inevitably has to pull artistic license. Plus, the whole everyone still has 80s hair and 80s fashions that so many artists still go in for even right now.

Re: Comic Fans

(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I'm too aware of the art so it draws my attention away from the story.

(I've never noticed the 80s thing. My comic examples are from the 90s since those are the first ones I thought of that I knew I could find examples of. I'm not a design-person so I guess it just doesn't bug me. Although I will say I don't care for the art in Dark Knight Returns either.)

I'll admit that with the recent Superbro look, DC has got at least one comic into the mid oughts. At least they are moving forward.

Your selection of examples are weird. The second, third and fourth examples are all pretty much the same style to me. Only the first link actually looks like something that isn't Marvel or DC house style.

*shrug*

What can I say? It looks different to me and I don't like it.

I like art that keeps human proportions realistic and not every man is a square-jawed he-man.

eh, I can enjoy a lot of styles but I don't really like "cartoonish" styles so much...i.e. I prefer people to look like, well, people and not caricatures.

I really liked Phil Noto's art on Black Widow (though I feel he fals a bit short on backgrounds, but he's great with people.

And I loved some of Marco Rudy's art on Bucky Barnes: Winter Soldier. It's painting-like.

I also like chris Bachalo's stuff - it's a bit grittier.

I tend to be very bored with what I call "house style" -- DC and Marvel both use similar styles for a majority of their comics. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, and in the hands of a good artist can look great (like Jim Lee when he's not got a million irons in the fire) but I tend to prefer more stylized work, such as that of Cliff Chiang (see his work on Wonder Woman.) You see a lot of these kinds of varying styles in the better graphic novel-style webcomics, and I infinitely prefer them to the standard superhero comics look. It's why when The Walking Dead ditched their original artist only 7 issues in I was a little annoyed, because I thought the comic looked better when the art was a little less realistic -- it worked well with the black and white.

As far as formats go, as long as it's not that ridiculous sideways Extreme Justice nonsense I can put up with anything -- though I find the old Watchmen 9-panel thing to be rather restricting.

I also prefer lots of color contrast.

I can handle a wide variety of art as long as its done consistently and skillfully. Miller and Mignola have great blacks. Kirby may have only a handful of faces, but I love his gonzo psychedelia. Lynda Barry's art and lettering is perfect for the stories. Peter Kuper, and classic Prohias (Spy vs. Spy) come to mind.

One of my current favourite Franco-Belgian comic artists is Yslaire. Haven't read much of his comics, but his art is gorgeous. I love his sketches especially. He tends to stick to a greyscale + red palette, which fits the dark themes he seems to go for in his stories.

I also really like Kevin Wada's art. I started following his tumblr.
