What are some odd (and/or arguably childish) fears you have or used to have?

(Don't be judgmental in the comments. The thread exists for a reason.)

I'm afraid of open doors. I must have some kind of sleep disorder because every time one is open, I have a dream that someone (or a monster) is standing in the doorway, and I start screaming and yelling at them, with no response. They must always be closed. Weird, I know.

I have every sympathy! I can't sleep if the door of my room is open. Theoretically, I know that if whatever it is I'm worried about wants to come in, a locked door won't even slow it down. But I still can't sleep if the door isn't both shut and locked.

This poses a real problem for my cat.

It's weird in how so many stories about the supernatural, a closed and locked door will stop them. I think it's the vampire thing - they need to be invited into your sanctum.

I'm the opposite. I can't sleep with the door closed, because a closed door could have anything lurking behind it, but an open one will let you see things coming.

I don't really mind wide open doors, but I can't have door ajar when I'm home alone or sleeping. It just freaks me out.

I think it's because a really open door is noticeable both when it's opening and when it is open, while having a door ajar is less so and someone can just be sneaky about them or something. I don't even really know myself, but I find it really creepy.

When I was younger pictures of people pulling silly faces used to freak me out. I don't know why. What's really strange is that ventriloquist dummies, harlequin dolls, clowns didn't bother me at all. But I couldn't look at silly faces. I'd hide my own face.

The noise of the toilet flushing used to freak me out. I would hit the button and then quickly back away like I thought I was going to be sucked down the pipes.

I was 5 though, so...

Also when my bedroom curtains get blown out from the windows by the wind I always think they're going to fall back and there will be someone standing behind them. To this day I still think this. I don't know why. Too many horror movies?

I'm 25 and I'm still afraid of the dark. I can't sleep in a totally dark and silent room.

I'm also afraid of bugs. I don't scream so much anymore, but I still refuse to touch them. There's a massive dead cicada on my balcony that I haven't dealt with because of this. :(

I used to have nightmares of my folks dying in a plane crash and still get worried whenever they go on one.

I don't like opening doors. Or looking thru windows at night. I am also terrified of storms.

I have never learned to sleep in a fully dark room, or with the door to the room open.

And when I'm walking under trees, I can't quite shake the fear that a rabid raccoon might drop out of the treetops and bite me.

Mirrors scared the hell out of me as a kid. I still don't like to be around them when I'm alone.

Oh, man.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
In general, I'm okay with them, but when there's a blackout and I'm using candles, I dread going in the bathroom - stupid Bloody Mary sleepover games.

I don't know if this counts as a proper fear since it's not all that serious, but I live close to the WTC and still twitch when I hear a plane fly over my house.

I don't fear Muslims, just hyper aware of planes.

The garbage disposal.

I used to think spiders would come crawling up the toilet if I sat down on it(I still kind of think this tbh but I have mastered the art of ignoring that particular train of thought when on the loo these days).

I used to think that flushing the toilet would summon some kind of demon or monster, so I would flush the loo, wash my hands and bolt down the stairs as fast as I could to get away before it finished flushing(because y'know the monster would only appear at the end of the flush cycle).

I used to be afraid of sharks, I thought they'd be in any large body of water and try to eat me, the fear of them faded but not the distrust of large bodies of water I can't see the bottom of.

Werewolves and snakes in the toilet.

Both are entirely my grandmother's fault.

Yet another one who can't sleep if their bedroom door is open, or if there's no source of light or sound in my room. I'd be a hell of a lot happier if my dog would let me shut him either into or out of my room at night without crying.

I still get a bit unnerved around mirrors in the dark. Like somehow, my silhouetted reflection isn't really me but some other entity.

When I was a kid I had this fear that Gollum from the Lord of the Rings was going to kill me in the shower. I don't know how I cooked up that fear. Yeah, he freaked me out in the first movie, but why specifically would he kill me in the shower? I dunno. Little me had a weird imagination.

Getting on escalators.

This TV commercial made by some religious group that had a grayscale image of the Virgin Mary fading in from a white screen. To not be scared, I'd lift my feet off the floor during that, because...???

sa

I'm fine with escalators now. But I'll second the people above when it comes to mirrors. I get a bit nervous when I'm facing the bathroom mirror and just about to switch on the lights.

When i was little, I used to run like hell to get indoors if I heard a plane or helicopter coming. It wasn't even like I thought "oh no it could be carrying a bomb" or whatever. I was just scared of them. Which was ridiculous; I was put on a private plane and flown to another hospital the day I was born, and flew a lot after that, and I'm not afraid of flying or anything. (Turbulence, on the other hand...)
