Re: What's wrong

I haven't been sleeping well. I work second shift, so being up until 2 or 3 a.m. isn't unusual, but save for maybe a week spread out over the past month and a half, I've had wicked insomnia where I either can't get to sleep or I can't stay asleep.

Last night, for instance, I slept for about an hour at 3 a.m., but then I woke up at 4, too mentally exhausted to actually do anything but unable to sleep until about 10. After which I was dead to he world for 5 hours, and if this weren't my weekend I'd have been screwed because I slept through my alarm and didn't wake up until an hour and a half after I would have been expected at work.

I've actually been late to work three times for this very reason (once by an hour on a day that I was the boss). So I need to figure that shit out.

That sucks, I'm so sorry!! Is the second shift a new schedule, or has something happened recently to mess with your sleep schedule?

Nope, I've been second shift for eight years now.

I'm going to try getting more exercise and see if for some reason that lack has decided all of a sudden to be what's keeping me up. Also adjusting my caffeine consumption. But if this shit carries into September, I'm talking to a doctor.

Those sound like very smart plans! I don't know if you can fall asleep with noises going, but for me, having something pretty steady playing, like a podcast that I don't care too much about, can really help me to nod off quickly when I want to. Lets my mind take a break and my focus wander a bit, which is half the battle, for me.

God, insomnia is the WORST. It truly does make life a pain in the ass because it throws you off in basically every conceivable way. I'm sorry this is happening to you. :/ Hopefully you can work out what is causing it, or it'll fix itself. (Sooner rather than later.)

I go through periods like that too (where at most I sleep for a couple hours, or I'm waking up what feels like 15 times a damn night) but rarely do they last over a month. I think I'd see a doc, tbh... It would be worth it, I think.

The only thing I can think of on the advice front is: I've heard if you have trouble sleeping you should get up, have a small snack, maybe read for a little bit and try to go back to bed. I never eat once I've went to bed though, and while I do sometimes read when I wake up in the middle of the night, sometimes that ends with me reading three hours straight before I try to go back to sleep. So... Yea. Not sure how good that plan is.

Good luck!
