Yeah, intermediate gods or archangels. They get some explanation for what element they rule over, but barring the tale of Aulë making the dwarves, they don't have huge reams of characterisation.

But I like working with little characterisation, as I can play my pet character types. One of the more stressful RP characters (and very rewarding too) is Boromir, because he does have background, both from LotR canon and from the fanfic that inspired me to RP him.
