Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm feeling like I want some inspiration from all you creative motherfuckers out there.

BUT. Don't do it the normal way, like name age history strength weakness and all. Skip that. Instead can you give:

- Their main motivation.
- Their definition of "being a good person". (Follow-up, do they think they are good?)
- Something that no one would realize about them unless they know them really well.

I would find this interesting!

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Main motivation: Sort of to make money. More to restore balance in the universe between "chaos" and "order".

Definition of "being a good person": She believes that being a good person means doing things that contribute to the greater good. However, she doesn't think she's good, at least not deep down.

Something that no one would realize: Her complicated past with her adopted siblings, who happen to be the villains of the story.

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
But why does she want to restore balance? What does she think is bad about chaos winning or order winning?

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Restoring balance happens to have a great financial incentive for her. But, besides that, she believes deep down that there is supposed to be a balance to the universe. Every time one wins over the other, people die, and that's not how the world is supposed to be, not in her mind.

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds more like stopping fighting all together rather than restoring a balance. How far would she be willing to go to achieve that? Like if it was possible but only through being a dictator or overlord, would she pick that option?

Main motivation: Get really fucking rich through criminal activity, then take over the world and enslave everyone.

Definition of a good person: A naive loser.

Something that no one would realize about them unless they know them really well: They're insecure as fuck.

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
What do they plan to do with all the enslaved people? As in, if they ever achieve that, then what?

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
They haven't thought ahead that far! They're more interested in the idea of world domination than what comes next, or the actual logistics of it. For a supposed criminal mastermind, they're not very practical.

Her main motivation is family. She will do whatever she has to to keep her grandson and his family safe and happy.

For her a good person is one who is loyal and more concerned with others than themselves. This notion was created from a bitter struggle against an ambitious person who she harbors an unyielding bitterness and anger towards.

She would probably consider herself a good person, though if she wasn't, it wouldn't bother her. She has no qualms about doing shady things for her family's well being if necessary and she would probably consider anything she did for their sakes to be justified because of that.

Only her family knows that she was utterly broken by the death of her husband and the rest of her immediate family. Or that she keenly feels all the other tragedies that have befallen her. Her anger towards the ambitious person is just a way to ignore the hurt she feels. She wears an icy mask that reveals nothing, but inside she is deeply scarred, which is why it matters so much to her that her remaining family is safe and happy.

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Is there anything that person could do to convince her that they had changed or reformed?

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
She will end up forgiving the ambitious person (at least nominally) but only because her family sort of entices her into it. She will never be friendly with that person though. She will only do it for the sake of her family.

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Main Motivation: To get back her heart, which she (literally) lost due to her own mistakes with trying to use magic for the first time.
Definition of a good person: A person who is kind without an ulterior motive. She doesn't think she's a good person, but she's not letting that stop her.
No one would realize: she can be a truly viscous, vengeful person. (Also that she is missing her heart)

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
What actual effect does not having a heart mean? Is it a purely physical issue? Or are there other parts to it?

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Its mainly a physical issue - she is kept alive with magic, her blood still pumps through her body, etc, but she is horrified by her own state and worried that she won't be kept alive without it forever. She is traumatized by the experience, but there aren't really any side effects along the lines of "now she can't love/feel emotion"

-to relax and have a good time
-probably somebody who has a more positive impact than negative, they don't think about it much
-they don't actually drool all the time

Re: Tell me about an original character of yours!

- to be the hero that her parents were, kind of a legacy thing
- being a good person to her is doing the right thing even when no one is watching or cares. She wouldn't call herself a good person, but she's not a bad person. She feels she's an all right person. She's done some things in the name of defending her Club and family she isn't proud of, but would do again if the situation called for it.
- that if all was right with the world and she didn't have to live up to her parent's legacy, she would be going to art school and creating beautiful things (Because to her, that is how she believes that there is goodness in mankind) but everyone else just sees how dedicated she is to the life she's chosen

(Anonymous) 2015-08-08 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate this thread! It gives me another way to look at my character, especially since I'll be writing the last section of her story this November.

Motivation: She would tell you it's to find the government base where her boyfriend is working, though if you dig deeper than that, it's because she wants to be somewhere safe.

Good Person: To her, a good person is someone who holds on to their morality; not killing unless its necessary, willingness to help others with no strings attached, helping those less fortunate, etc.

At the beginning of the story, she would have considered herself a good person. Now, however, she's convinced she's a monster and is just waiting for everyone around her to abandon her to her fate.

Secret: She regularly hallucinates the image of someone she thinks she unjustly killed, who pops up in periods of high stress just to needle her.

Ambrose Lasko

Main motivation: To be a part of something 'great' and preserve 'magic's greatest creation'
Definition of being a good person: limiting oneself to mediocrity/cowardice. He doesn't consider himself good, but he does consider himself brilliant which to him is better than being "good"
Something that no one would realize about them unless they know them really well: He's become more aware of his issues through his years of being dead (narcissist/ antisocial personality disorder)

Kagami Toyaka
Main motivation: To achieve the perfect life/everything she always wanted
Definition of being a good person: Has 'misplaced priorities/loyalty' (your loyalty should be to HER obviously) . She tries to convince herself she is, but as mentioned below, it's just another one of her lies to herself.
Something that no one would realize about them unless they know them really well: Kagami is a compulsive liar. She lies to everyone, but most frequently lies to herself.

Skye Stryke
Main motivation: protect his loved ones
Definition of being a good person: doing what you're supposed to even if it sucks. Him personally? He doesn't really think so. He gets by, but he feels like he isn't doing all he could.
Something that no one would realize about them unless they know them really well: He has a fear of crowds, and gets exhausted with spending large amounts of time "out" at events.

Oh snap, I get to talk about my MC

[personal profile] iceyred 2015-08-08 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, his name is Jeremy Quinn and he died the day before his sixteenth birthday. He died in a school shooting and took a bullet for someone he didn't like. Because he sacrificed himself for someone else, he gets the opportunity to be an Associate of Death, which means he helps move the dead from this world to the next.

Through a series of unfortunate events, he gets called back to his tiny hometown where he meets the girl he died for, who is still a miserable bitch. His definition of being a good person would three-fold.
1. Someone who is good at their job.
2. Someone who can forgive the people who hurt them.
3. Someone who can stand up for themselves.
He does not think he is a good person.

His hometown is under attack from a siren who ensnares Associates of Death and uses their power to become immortal. Jeremy's motivation to find and defeat said siren is because he wants:
1. To be seen as competent as an Associate.
2. To save a home he feels mistreated him and screwed him over. (he loves it despite that)
3. To stop the siren from hurting the people he cares for.

Something that nobody realizes, except the girl who loves him, is that he's very, very just. Fairness is extremely important to him, and he'll go out of his way to make sure someone isn't uncomfortable. And she thinks he's got a smile that reminds her of candy, which few people ever see.

This is a great writing exercise, thanks!

Whoa this sounds pretty cool. The character sounds very interesting. Put of curiosity , does he ever come to find anything about the girl he sacrificed himself for that likes. Do they ever change how they feel about each other?

Re: Oh snap, I get to talk about my MC

He meets the girl he died for. She's choked into a coma right before the story starts and ends up so close to death, her soul can move around with the rest of them. She's still a miserable bitch though. In addition to having her reputation dragged through the mud (the press found out a boy died for her and made her out to be a teenage seductress and she read the online comments), she's also the victim of sexual abuse by her math teacher (and the siren is a creepy fucker too), slut shaming, and her parents are divorced and her mom drinks too much.

She still holds her head high and sneers at anyone she considers a social inferior. Which is everybody. Including Jeremy.

But the other Associate of Death, the one who loves him, doesn't take her shit. At all. In fact, she tells her to STFU, that being miserable doesn't justify making everyone else miserable. Tells her that nobody likes her, that she's nothing. That without them there, she likely wouldn't make it through the day before getting ripped apart by a ghost. (ghosts are souls who aren't shuffled off to the next world in a timely manner. They go insane and the worst parts of their personalities physically manifest.)

Being forced to realize that she wouldn't survive without other people, when she's survived everything else, has her go into meltdown mode. She thinks a good person is a strong one. One who can take care of herself. Someone who doesn't need anyone. And up until that point she would have considered herself a good person.

Now she has to admit that she's not a good person. That she's a bully. But she and the other girl meet in the place where she was attacked, and the other girl apologizes (even though she doesn't have to. She just realized she didn't pull a punch she should have and she's not cruel). Khloe accepts it, and the other girl realizes that she (Khloe) is actually terrified of almost everything, which is something nobody noticed.

It doesn't magically solve everything, but she comes to terms with how she treated Jeremy, stands up to the creepy siren, remembers who attacked her, and, if she's not winning any nice awards, at least stops actively making everyone else miserable. For his part, Jeremy manages to forgive her, which is something she needs.

Main motivation: Keep her mom safe and stay out of trouble.

Def. for being a good person: Someone who is kind even when it'd be easier to not be kind.

What few realize: She doesn't value her own life.

Let's see . . .

He'd respond flippantly, maybe say that hurting people makes him feel alive, but it's more than that. He has an almost ritualistic need to bring down arrogant people and make them realize their own weakness. If someone thinks they're powerful enough to get away with hurting people, he'll hurt them in turn, and if someone thinks they're a good person, he'll try to make them think they're no better than he is.

At the start, he sees goodness as a theoretical concept. There are no "good people," just really awful people and less awful people. He's eventually forced to admit that another character has no interest in personal gain and only wants to help other people, but he can't quite process her selflessness, and he regards her as an almost magical figure.

That cold-hearted bad boy just-doesn't-give-a-fuck act of his? It's not an act. He doesn't care about anyone else, he doesn't care about himself, and he will never truly love anyone. He lives in the moment, and when the moment comes for him to die, he won't feel the slightest regret or desire to put it off.

Kizár (my RP Silmaril character - the silmarils may not be "original" but them being living beings is a bit more-so).

Motivation: To be happy and have family, whether that is the remnants of her old family from Valinor, or new family she has adopted. She wants to gain this through as good means as possible, and hopefully in a way that is compliant with destiny/fate (a concept she strongly believes in, especially having seen little bits of other timelines).

Definition of a Good Person: Someone who does what is best for as many people as they can effect, without succumbing to greed, cruelty, or lines of thinking that involve deliberately sacrificing people to death or torture "for the Greater Good". For the last reason, she has something of a jaundiced view of such people as Gandalf, Galadriel and to a lesser degree, Elrond.

Is she good? She is, unequivocally aligned to Light, but given examples of what people did during the first Age and her current opinion of "The Good and the Wise" of the Third Age, she does not think Light automatically equals Good at all times. With that mindset, she believes she is just as faulty as anyone else trying to do what is right. She with get things wrong, but believes she is still doing them for the right reasons.

Something that no one would realize: She is still very injured by her time in the Deep Fire. The Fire could not physically harm her, but it is inhabited by brutally vicious spirits that are some of Morgoth's oldest marring of Arda, and those spirits harassed and tormented her viciously. The scars are still there, even in the timeline where she spent time living in Thedas (something that made that version stronger).

______________________________________

Harliquin

Harliquin is an old character, not directly linked to a fandom. She's a godlike entity from a family that spans three multiverse-ruling races, roughly divided along Order/Chaos/Neutrality lines. Her real name is Mimnristriqua Malaasa-Praadss, but she has spread the "Harliquin" persona - a trickster-figure - as a convenient front to cover her activities. Also, there is more than one multiverse in the overall omniverse, with an omniversal feature commonly known as "The Rift" allowing someone strong enough to travel it to visit other multiverses. Harliquin's mother came from another multiverse that was dying.

Motivation: Protect her family and restore the true idea of what Chaos is. Harliquin believes Chaos does not automatically equal evil and cruelty, she believes chaos is ultimately random and mindless and Demons (the lords of Chaos) have lost track of that in favour of Evil.

Definition of a Good Person: Someone who truly lives up to their true nature, without being needlessly cruel. Since she believes Chaos =/= Evil, she believes even Demons can forego cruelty.

Is she good? She tries to live up to what she is - the child of all three races, the Keepers (Order), Demons (Chaos), and Nexus (Neutrality), as well has her special inheritance from her mother's line, an ancient power from the Rift, Rift Fire, which she believes is in fact the balance point between Order and Chaos.

Something that no one would realize: She is already the Queen of Chaos. When the Keepers and Demons were at war, she helped her grand-aunt Briieth, the Keeper Queen, defeat and imprison the Demon Queen. Briieth, being the Queen of Order, could not claim the Chaos Crown, but because of both her mixed heritage and Rift Fire, Harliquin could. But like a lot of things from that time (including hiding away Briieth's baby daughter), her claim of the crown was never revealed. Now a the Demon Queen is free and a new war is brewing, her hold of the crown might soon be revealed.

(it's so late and you probably won't see this but eh)

-Main motivation: self development. His purpose is to be the most 'developed' he can be - which in his case, he defines as experiencing new things, learning new skills, and learning how to interact with a society wildly different from the one he grew up in.

-'being a good person': I don't think he necessarily thinks in that paradigm. For him 'good' would probably be someone who interferes with others as little as possible, but I think he works more on the idea that a truly 'evil' person is one who creates hedonistic destruction or infringe on others' self-determination in order to achieve their own goals.

- Something no one would realize about him: He actually has a lot of issues with self-confidence, and is more emotionally dependent on the people around him than he likes to show.

(even if you don't see this, it was interesting for me to write!)
