Image: Two different pictures of the Riddler from the Animated Series. On the left, he's wearing a green suit with a black shirt, purple gloves, a purple mask, a white tie with a question mark on it, and a bowler hat. He's holding a walking stick and looking very satisfied. On the right, he's chained up to a cage, bald, and wearing a green onsie with a giant purple question mark on the chest with purple gloves and what appear to be purple ballet slippers. No wonder he looks depressed.

Text: I love the Riddler. I love the Animated Series. But I HATE what the series did to him after the animation change.

(In a text box underneath the suited Riddler) Sample dialogue: "My my, can we actually have a brain beneath that pointy cowl of ours? So tell me, have you brawn to match?"
(In a text box above the jumpsuited Riddler) Sample dialogue: "Hey diddle diddle, time for a riddle."

I know Riddler was difficult to write for, and that they wanted to pay homage to Frank Gorshin, but I can't help but feel like this was a major downgrade.
(Then again, maybe I'm just bitter because I love men in suits.)

I don't remember having too many issues with the direction of the storylines/characters (except for the new Robin) but I didn't care for the new designs either.

I don't remember much about this show, but Frank Gorshin as the Riddler is probably my favorite portrayal of any Batman character ever. It was the most ridiculous show and he was running around in a green unitard saying "Riddle me this!" and yet he somehow came off as the most dignified thing on screen. He was the only villain in that version who came off as remotely creepy, scary, or threatening. Also, he wasn't always in a unitard. He wore a suit jacket and bowler hat frequently, too, so it looks to me like both versions of the Riddler here are meant to evoke Gorshin's Riddler (or the 60s comics Riddler, which is what the tv show was drawing from).

I haven't had much opportunity to see Gorshin's Riddler in action, but I'm glad to hear he was the most "Serious" villain. He's been my favorite Batman villain ever since, well, I watched the original Animated Series as a kid.

(Plus, I HAVE seen the movie, and I will always have a soft spot for the "sparrow with a machine gun" riddle. Whoever came up with those was a demented genius.)

And maybe you're right that they were paying homage in both versions, although this featurette seems to say otherwise;

But based off the pictures I'm seeing on Google, they probably did draw physical inspiration from both the suit and the unitard, even if they changed the personality.

I don't remember specifics but I know I loved TAS as a kid, however, the left looks much, much better to me. The costume is more interesting and the art is nicer to look at. As for the lines, yes, I much prefer the first as well (reminds me of Riddler from the Arkham games, who they did a great job with), but maybe the dialogue was a bit more satisfying later on?

Not really. Riddler barely showed up in the later incarnations. This scene here is from his only major moment in the new series, and it was from the Superman TV show, no less.

As far as I can remember, once the change took place, he never actually uttered a riddle once.

Welp, that was a disappointing bit. He barely had any lines and they weren't even clever lines. (He should have at least taunted Supes while Bane was doing his thing.)

A Riddler who doesn't actually riddle isn't worth mentioning.

I only remember the version on the left so either I've blocked it from my memory or I didn't revisit many of the newer episodes!

I hated a lot of the animation changes in some of the later BTAS stories. For example: Joker becoming a demented Animaniac. Urgh.

I have a hard time watching anything that isn't the original animated series from the batman universe

Wait, wait. The Riddler was hard to write for?

I'm unsure if this was meant to be sarcasm or not, but apparently so;

http://dcau.wikia.com/wiki/Riddler

"In Batman Animated, Paul Dini wrote that the Riddler had the 'honor' of being the most difficult of Batman's rogues to write episodes for; a cerebral villain whose main criminal purpose was showing off how smart he was, rather than cause mayhem or seek revenge. As a result, many Riddler scripts [were] rejected for being too long or too silly."

I don't mind either look when you see what they did to him in "The Batman" cartoon - I'm trying to block the image of long haired Riddler out of my mind.

I'm shocked someone made this secret and it wasn't me.

Riddler was basically tragically underused in TAS in general. I'm a huge BTAS fan, but also a huge Riddler fan and like... I know he was hard, but considering he barely showed up (had only three episodes specifically about him and lbr "What is Reality" KINDA SUCKED) I just... I wish they could have used him better and not given him such a sucky redesign. Like I'm a big Gorshin fan, but his redesign was just... meh.
