Re: What do you think of the community on fandomsecrets?

I like it because it's one of the last bastions of ye olde LJ fandom culture. I hang around tumblr too and it's fun as long as you avoid the wankers, but it's just not the same.

Compared to some of the other (now dead) comms I used to frequent the F!S community not the greatest, but the current climate here is far more pleasant than it was back before the move to dreamwidth. At the very least, there's enough cool people and interesting dicussion to keep me coming back.

Now that I think of it, F!S is like the opposite of scans_daily. That place was great on LJ and is now a total shitfest on dreamwidth.

This is exactly how I feel about it.

Yeah, this. It feels like LJ culture, but tbh, without the drama. Yes, there is some drama here, but not NEARLY comparable to what it was in the LJ days. I worry to some extent it's a bit because anyone radically different would probably get fed up after long enough and leave and we just legitimately don't have any new blood here... but that aside, the discussion-focused feel of 2000s fandom is nice, and that's why I'm here.

NAYRT (though I did just reply) - That's actually a really good point. Even people on my flist could get... nasty. Although I've seen threads go haywire with wank for the same reason I saw other people's LJ comments sections go haywire with wank. At the same time, the wank doesn't leave here the way it sometimes ended up leaving LJ and going other places. I mean, you can still read about LJ wankstorms that happened ten years ago. Thank God unlike with twitter, most people didn't give their real names (and, frankly, most people didn't even know what the internet really was, so even if your name was released publicly, it was unlikely to do much damage).

+1 When I say I miss LJ fandom culture, the threads here are exactly what I mean. That's why I fell in love with LJ, and while I don't think it's as inactive as people like to say it is, the culture just isn't there anymore. But it's here and I love it.

Agreed. I love f!s because it reminds me what fandom was like back in the ~golden~ days of LJ. I still love tumblr, it's just a very different platform; I'd much rather come to a community like this to try to start a discussion...I feel like not only is someone more likely to see what I have to say, but they're more likely to reply, and we're more likely to be able to hold a decent conversation.

But I've been coming to f!s for many, many years and love seeing what secrets people come up with. I loved it before when the comm had more secrets and wank, and even when things were harder to keep up with (before we got individual threads for secrets), but I will say this: f!s before general comments was not as fun to me than f!s after general comments.

The only thing that worries me is how many people seem to have left (and how few new people there are), but...it happens. I'll keep coming here as long as people want to talk.

Now, f!s compared to other comms? ...I haven't been a part of another active comm in years, and there are a couple I adored and miss, but f!s has always been one of my favorites because of the fact it is multi-fandom. Multi-fandom spaces are lovely, and I've always wanted more of them.

NAYRT - This, and there's not a lot of conversation on LJ either. People still post, but not things you can really contribute to beyond "I hate that" or "that sounds fun." What's the fun in that? Everything people talk about here is what it was like in the golden age of LJ. It's not just the fandom posts, tbh I'm in so few fandoms anymore anyway, it's the confession threads and the advice threads and everyone's worst fast food experience.

It concerns me a little, but I think a lot of it's that F!S has high and low periods. Summer is quieter because people are away or doing outdoor things - that's why I haven't been around as much.

I haven't visited LJ for anything other than icons in quite a while. :( When I do think to see how an old community is doing or if a specific fandom has an active comm over there, I rarely find anything worth following. I'm sure some people stuck around, but it isn't the same sense of community; so many people moved on and I feel like people mostly hang around their own journals/flist.

Yea, that's exactly what the other anon was saying too...the back and forth. f!s isn't just about fandom, we talk about RL and have various discussion threads, sometimes extremely personal ones (asking for advice, or just wanting to talk about their problems), sometimes assorted, interesting ones (the confession threads, like you mentioned). Then there's the random threads (worst fast food experience fits) that are just fun to participate in, even if they don't always start a lot of discussion. (Hell, I even like "What did you have for dinner today?" or "What's your favorite food?" I love food, don't judge me.)

Because of the nature of f!s anyone can jump in, which is kind of nice because there's not as much pressure if you want to create your own thread. I don't do it as often as I'd like, but it's enjoyable!

It concerns me a little, but I think a lot of it's that F!S has high and low periods.

I'm hoping that's what it is! I know f!s has had highs and lows in the past, so maybe that's what's going on right now; perhaps we'll snap back. (The secret count this week has me feeling positive. Hopefully more people submitted secrets this week.)

AYRT - I was just thinking that part of the problem, imho, may be how restricted F!S is timewise. Because sometimes it's less that I don't have time to participate, and more that by the time I have a chance, all the flurry is over. Maybe some of that is due to how quiet it's gotten, I only came here within the past few years so for all I know threads went on for days, but it really seems you have to be here between 4ish and 7ish on weekends and 6:30ish-10 PM on weeknights, or you miss out. Whereas even with LJ comms you could at least participate within a day or two, if not more.

Re: What do you think of the community on fandomsecrets?

IA, I think that's part of it. I know there are days I don't make it here early and my comments are about the last in the threads and no one seems to be around. People don't seem to reply as much later in the evening (or almost at all on the next day).

Now, if you have a username and get notifications for your comments it's easier to get back to people, and I have at times spent days on a single conversation, replying back and forth, but in general...once the day is over, most people don't come back.

The only solution for that is just commenting on what you want, whenever you want, and hoping that other people will do the same. If more people were interested in longer conversations I'd be down with it too, but...you're right, people come and go. Time zones make things tricky for anyone who can't post right when the post goes up.

And honestly, I feel bad for people who DO want to be involved in discussion but miss it because of their time zone, or work, or whatever. I wish there was another way.

There's an extent to which it's cyclical. But ultimately it's also kind of undeniable, at this point, that F!S is declining, in terms of user base and in terms of post. There's scads of users who barely post any more or who don't post, and the number of posts has shifted down dramatically. We're in the twilight of F!S.

Which, you know. I feel personally that constitutionally, I'm the sort of person who expects everything they like to be in its twilight phase. So it makes sense to me. But it does suck.

See, this is what I fear, and it sucks to hear someone else say it. As far as I know f!s is one of the only active communities left, one of the only good multi-fandom places left for discussion, and of course one of the last pieces of what LJ used to be. I don't want to give that up. Without f!s I would be using tumblr, keeping to myself and being sad about having no one to talk about fandom with. :(

Yeah. I completely agree. It sucks. But it really is undeniable at this point.

But - if it's worth anything - I promise I'll be with you going down with the ship.

I was expecting more screaming and crying in that footage, but I guess you are classier and more composed then I.
