FS, what are your thoughts on (so-called) animal experts on TV?

I've heard plenty of people disagree with his methods (never watched him, so I don't know the details).

When I was a kid, I watched a lot of Crocodile Hunter and Steve Irwin always looked like he knew what he was doing. So at age 11 I was convinced that I knew exactly how to subdue a crocodile if I ever came across one, lol.

I'm sure most of them know what they're talking about, though because it's TV it wouldn't be imprudent to take everything they say with a grain of salt (especially since experts in the same field can disagree with each other).

I can't stand Cesar Millan's training because it's based on treating dogs like wolves who need to respect your dominance. The dog trainers I've worked with were all about positive reinforcement and I like that a lot better. The research I've looked at suggests it's better for the dog.

I don't watch them myself, at least not regularly. But I'd be skeptical of anyone who was ultimately in show business, which is what those people are.

Granted, from the episodes I've seen, the pet owners they "help" really are terrible. I'm sure they play it up for the cameras and such, but some of the basic techniques are probably useful to teach anyone viewing the programs.

I don't like Cesar Milan.

I love Jackson Galaxy.

Mostly complete fucking tools. Very few animal behaviourists.

Generally wish they'd stop misleading gullible morons who think that just because Cesar gave them a talk they'll be able to magically fix their animal's behaviour problems.

A thousand times this.

Cesar is a moron with outdated methods that ultimately cause more harm than good, and any idiot who thinks studying a thrown-together wolf "pack" from the 1940s is a proper way of understanding modern day dogs shouldn't be given a second of airtime.

I like Victoria Stilwell, if I was in the market for a dog I'd pick up her books.

Cesar Millan fuck no.

Jackson Galaxy yes, Victoria Stilwell absolutely fuck yes. They're both good.
caerbannog: my dog (THISTLE)

He's basing his work off debunked studies. He's not wrong 100% of the time but he's not what is call an animal expert. He's so inflexible and not willing to try new things ... And some of his dogs he's 'fixed' are reoffending later on and worse.

Also all the dominance submissive crap. Sure, the dog needs to see me as 'the boss' but he goes to unsafe extremes? Blah.

I'll stick to my noncherry picking trainers thank you.

Also his muzzles are stupid looking and unsafe.

I'm just as critical of "positive only" trainers or anyone not willing to mix and match to find out what works best for the dog in the least harmful way. And any quick fix trainers. Actually any animal behaviour solving TV shows I'm going to side eye because some fuck wit us going to try to alpha roll the wrong dog.
