Inspired by #15

What are you a fandom snob/elitist about?

Re: Inspired by #15

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a gamer, but I share OP's feelings about remakes and reboots in general. Off the top of my head I can only think of one remake that wasn't an absolute travesty, and the film in question went on to have one of the worst sequels in cinematic history so...

Just you wait, when Dishonored 2 is released I will become the biggest snob!

Re: Inspired by #15

I wouldn't say I'm a snob, but I do not get why people have ships where the characters hate one another in canon, like Harry/Draco or Mohinder/Sylar. Especially the latter, tbh. (Old fandoms, I know.) How can you even imagine it, except for hatesex?

Re: Inspired by #15

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do Harry and Draco really HATE hate each other though? It's not really like how Harry and Lord Voldemort hate each other, at least not for the first few books.

I could get on board the Mohinder/Sylar train just for the hotness. So there's probably some of that going on.

Re: Inspired by #15 -- Sylar/Mohinder

Firstly, my GOD is Sendhil Ramamurthy a beautiful man. That's all one needs, really.

Secondofly, there was a span of 2-3 episodes in season 1 when Mohinder and "Zane"/Sylar were on a roadtrip, and Mohinder had no idea who his companion really was but he liked who Sylar pretended to be. That, my friend, was a magical time for planting ideas into fic writers' heads. The best Sylar/Mohinder fic I ever read was written during that time -- http://archiveofourown.org/works/178250. because I'd say a majority of hate-pairings are actually implied in canon to like each other more than either of them would say? even Joker and Batman clearly can't live without each other.

I'm a fandom snob about fanfiction. A lot of people are happy to just read fanfics about their favorite characters in different situations. I quit out of a lot of fics because they are just bad. I'm baffled at how so many awful fanfics can get reviews.

Disclaimer: Writing awful fanfic is a great stepping stone for a new author's development. It doesn't mean I have to like it.

I don't read much fanfic and I only like the really good stuff. So yes to this. I get that your id is happy, that's just not what is driving my desire to read fic.

Nope because it would be hypocritical to me. I am always late to the party.

Star Trek

I understand liking the reboots. But if it's the ONLY thing you're into in the franchise, you're not a Trek fan as far as I'm concerned.

I get unreasonably annoyed by people who say they're fans of something but don't know the names of the characters. I don't mean spelling the names wrong but just not having any idea at all and referring to major characters as things like "the blond guy" and "the mom". I'm working on getting over it.

Major characters, I understand. But more often than not, I've had to have the wikia up to watch Star Wars shows because they keep throwing in one shot characters and never mentioning their names again.

Yeah that one bugs me a bit as well, only for the main characters though, I can totally understand not knowing every single side-character's name(especially if they only turn up once or twice).

Re: Inspired by #15

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Some people are just really, honestly terrible with names. I know if I'm watching two shows with anything even remotely in common (period, genre, there are significant characters who look even vaguely alike), I'll mix up character names when talking about them with unholy frequency. I know who the characters are, I can keep them straight when watching the show, but for the love of god don't ask me to actually put a name to them.

Saying "the blond guy, you know, the one with the hand" is slightly less embarrassing than referring to Jaime Lannister as Rochefort.

Definitely a Tolkien book!snob, especially for The Hobbit. Lesser degree for LOTR but yeah, definitely a Tolkien elitist.

Theatre stuff. I'm not going to fight people over it-- any interest in live theatre is better than none!-- but I certainly have strong opinions about it.

TE Lawrence fandom

I saw a fucking PROFESSOR talk about him and I wanted to scream.

He's not the FOURTH brother, he's the second! The director of the film is David LEAN not David LEECH.

Holy fuck, how such a man is a fucking professor made me want to scream -- and I only listened to 10 minutes of his lecture.

Anything I feel really strongly about, tbh. Like, ten years ago I used to be really hardcore about my knowledge of MST3k and I'd call you out if you tried to argue with me about something in canon or if you started a Bill vs Trace or Mike vs Joel debate.

I guess, right now, I'm hardcore about my opinions of certain wrestlers (canon) relationships with each other. Like, if you try and argue that Jamie and Joey would abandon Seth willingly or some shit like that I will fight you because that is some ooc fuckery. Those dudes love him more than their ownselfs and that shit is canon, backed by canon dialogue and canon action.

And the fact that Sony thinks it's a good idea to remake Jumanji. Just no. NO.

Re: Inspired by #15

There are certain turns of phrase that are rarely encountered in published fiction but are fucking ubiquitous in fanfic, and they were already worn out in fic from 10 years ago and yet they're still EVERYWHERE.

Ex: the word "boneless" as relating to sexual exhaustion
pupils "blown wide" with lust, often "leaving only a ring of [insert color here; it's usually green] iris visible"
anything "ghosting" over skin
"fingers scrabbling for purchase"
Anytime anyone says, pre-sex, "Bed. Now."

Etc.

Like, there's nothing wrong with these phrases as-is, but they are goddamn EVERYWHERE in fic, and they make me think that the writer is either including them in their writing out of laziness (can't be bothered to come up with a novel expression), or because they've learned to write from fic and those phrases seem as unremarkable as any other common figure of speech, and/or worst of all, they have terrible taste and actually ENJOY those tired, trite expressions.

Your fic might be a work of revolutionary genius otherwise, but if I see you use something like this in your writing, your star loses a little bit of shine in my estimation. I'm sure no one will lose any sleep over this, but....you know, just saying. :)

The most popular entry in my fandom is by far the worst. I don't think it's elitist to think that way, but sneezing wrong in my fandom is now elitist and mean, so I just don't say anything anymore.

I'm not really. I'm kind of a snob, though, about people who want to exclude other fans. I hate fans who tell other fans they aren't "real fans" or that their opinions are objectively wrong.

Oh, wait, Wizard of Oz. I'm a snob about that. The books and the one animated movie that was an accurate adaption are the only things I like. The live action movie is horrible, and the less said about Wicked or any of the modern takes on it that changes everything the better.
