(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)And here's the thing, "right" and "wrong" are pretty relative here. Even if Square Enix (note: not Squaresoft, which was the company that made FFVII) sets her official name as Aerith, that does not mean Aeris wasn't her canon name in the original game. On Western promotional materials, Aeris was used, and yes, in the official translation of the game. It was then used again in Final Fantasy Tactics and later materials, and CONTINUES to be used for the re-release of the original game. It's canon, end of story. Will it be changed in the remake? Almost definitely, but that doesn't make the name Aeris somehow invalid. It's not like the name was used in a few beta releases and then quickly changed, again, it was used in every English release and is still used.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)I'm a nostalgia fag too, but sometimes you just gotta accept things for what they are. They fucked up the spelling back then and decided to fix it up in every upcoming related works. End of story.
Also IIRC Nomura wrote it "Aerith" as soon as the early concept art and sketches. I think he intended the spelling to be a reference to "Earth", given the character's link to the planet. That also the Japanese spelling ("earisu" in romaji). And before you ask, Japanese are using "su" when translating foreign words with "th" because there's simply no other character close enough in Japanese. Knowing that, I would have tried to prevent any misunderstanding by also writing the character's name with western letters in concept art - exactly what Nomura did.
But hey, even when presented with solid facts, nostalgia fags will nostalgia. That's what they do - fuck the creator's vision, right ?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)There were a lot of mistranslation in FF VII though, some even people who've only played the English version could spot. I know that people make translation errors when rushing but I'll never understand how "This guy are sick" came about.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)like sorry, idc if jif is the "correct" version, it's still wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)but seriously, why would "gif" be pronounced "jif". When does g followed by i ever make anything but the hard g sound? I just can't.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)Not to mention names like Giles and Giselle. (Which, OK, probably from the French, but still.)

Gigi
Not that many words in English, surprisingly, but lots of words in French and Spanish, where it's the rule.
I agree it's natural to pronounce it like "gift" without the last letter, though.
