Re: Unpopular or Controversial Fandom Opinions

I don't think this opinion is remotely unpopular or controversial here, but I want to rant about it so whatever.

You can't decide a character is canonically autistic based on how they act. Just because you're autistic and have behaviors in common with a character doesn't prove that character is autistic. It is impossible for writers to unintentionally create an autistic character when they were just trying to create a character who's "weird," because characters aren't real people with brains that develop organically; they act the way they do for no reason other than the reason their creators say they do. So shut uuuupppp about fans being ableist for calling weird and creepy characters weird and creepy. That's what they're supposed to be.

yehbut creators have brains that develop organically, and who knows what sort of subconscious shit goes into creating their characters, which includes common archetypes or observations of people they know.

like, i read an agatha christie novel the other day where there was a young woman in it who fit the description of "autistic" to a tee. like, everything. i don't think christie knew about autism back then but she did know about people.

Yeah, that's the thing though, if the creators don't know about autism or intend to write an autistic person, they're never going to write a character that's definitively autistic. Even if they base them on real autistic people without knowing those people are autistic. Because those characters aren't going to be exactly like those real autistic people, they're going to have the writer's personal ideas influencing how they act and what their purpose for being in the narrative is, too. I made the rant because it's always the second a headcanoned-autistic character behaves in a non-typical way for an autistic person -- or for any person, just does something completely over the top -- people cry ableism because it's portraying autistic people incorrectly and making them look like total weirdos. So if it was never canon stated that the character was autistic, and they are revealed to not behave like a real autistic person after all, it can be assumed that their previous behavior that seemed autistic was actually just coincidence. And after all, there are also real people who display behaviors associated with autism and turn out not to be autistic.

I'm not sure I agree with you. If a creator bases a character's behavior off of a real life person without realizing that person is autistic, then I think that, yes, that character can be unintentionally autistic. This can happen with depression, narcissistic personality disorder, alcoholism, etc.
