Ugh. I hate elitist fans who want to keep other fans out of the fandom. You don't own the fandom. Movie fans are allowed to join.

I think in this case it's less about movie fans vs comic fans and more about the kind of fans that psychopathic characters tend to attract.

That's not what I got from the secret. The secret sounded like every other fan in every fandom I've ever been with that has an adaption or changes and where certain fans like to consider themselves "real" fans and exclude others.

The bit about how there are enough obnoxious fans already combined with the worries I've come across elsewhere that focus on the type of people who sometimes gravitate towards characters like Deadpool make me think different, but you could be right.

That's not how I read it. The secret only said that they don't want another wave of obnoxious fans when there are already so many obnoxious fans in the fandom.

That's not a "real" vs. "fake" fans thing, that's a "I don't want even more assholes in this fandom" thing. As someone on the fringes of Deadpool fandom I can confirm that there are a lot of assholes already in the fandom. If the movie does well and brings a lot of new fans, some of these fans are inadvertedly going to be assholes. No one wants assholes in their fandom, so.

(Having said that I want to make it clear that Ireally want the movie to be amazing. My local cinema doesn't show Disney movies anymore, now I need to get my superhero fix from the other studios.)

Maybe you are right, though I still think wanting to keep other fans out of the fandom is elitist regardless.

Your theater specifically won't show Disney movies? Why? That seems odd.

Disney puts some very strict (and ridiculous) restrictions/conditions on cinemas with regards to when and how often their movies have to be shown, or posing a minimum seat count for the movie theater. Our local cinema is family owned with only a handful theaters of varying sizes, none of which is a s big as a small theater from a big cinema chain.

To meet the requirements for AOU, for example, they would have had to show the movie in the biggest theater three times a day for about two weeks, whether there's enough demand to see it or not. At some point they would have to show it in two theaters at the same time, meaning AOU would have taken over half of the cinema's capacity during that timeslot. And it's not like as though AOU was the only movie out during that time. Even if there were enough demand to make showing Disney movies that often profitable (AOU probably would have been, but Ant-Man?), the cinema management said that they wouldn't accept such ludicrous terms.

I'm genuinely a bit hurt by your implication here, but I know you probably don't truly mean to paint all Deadpool fans in a negative light. I can't help but be defensive about it, though.

Did you miss the part where OP says that this fandom already has enough obnoxious people? Implying that the problem is not movie fans per se, but Deadpool fans in general?

If we were talking about any other fandom I would agree with you, but in this case you REALLY have to consider what the bulk of hardcore Deadpool fans are like to begin with. (Hint: It's more than a little scary.)

Hmmm. Maybe. I still see that as rather elitist, though. There are lots of scary fans in every fandom. They have every right to be fans even if I disagree with their opinions. No one has the right to keep anyone else out of a fandom, and wishing for a movie to tank just so there aren't new fans is elitist regardless.
